- Last time I was on here 4.5 and below were the only exploitable firmwares.
- I'm currently rocking a 3DS XL on 4.4 with emunand on 9.2 and gateway on 3.7.1 (updated gateway literally 5 minutes ago)

Does anyone want to update me on what has gone on lately? Also, maybe give me some suggestions what to do with my 3ds such as updating since I am completely clueless what is going on after not picking up my 3ds in almost 2 years.

Follow Plailect's guide. It is always kept up to date. A9LH is now the accepted standard. CFW on boot with updated sysNAND, no need for emuNAND at all. But never fear, if you follow the guide properly all your stuff will end up on sysNAND with nothing lost and your emuNAND will be deleted.

Gateway is now nearly more trouble than it's worth - you can still boot into it by having a 9.2 emuNAND and using it to open the Gateway menu, then boot Gateway sysNAND. Once you have A9LH under your belt you can look into this, it's asked a lot so you'll find explanations how to use your Gateway everywhere.

might be worth mentioning that you'll want to set aside a chunk of time to get this set up, as there's a fair amount of writing to/reading from sysnand which is a slow process no matter how you slice it, but what you end up with is a system that can be safely updated, and is effectively permanently exploited.

So am I supposed to update my 3ds to the latest version before doing any of this? Also, is there a way I can do the exploit through gateway without having to buy the exploitable games?

NOOOO! 11.0 is not downgradeable, not to mention there's no free entrypoints on 10.6+. Read the upgrading to 9.2 section.

Edit: read the entire guide, plus all the preliminary stuff, plus the FAQ and the troubleshooting section. Then read the guide again twice just for good measure, before you begin doing anything.

I agree, don't do ANYTHING to your 3ds until you read the ENTIRE guide. A simple update at the wrong place could ruin it all.

Ok thanks. If I read correctly, gateway supports 9.2 now. So could I update to 9.2 and then download ninjhax to exploit my 3ds? Aka I'm too cheap to buy the game
Don't use gateway.the guide that quantumcat and I posted will give you MUCH better CFW than gateway can give you.

Answering your edit: you don't need to buy anything but your Gateway card is reasonably useless now (you can get it working again later on). Up to version 10.5 you can use browserhax to get into the homebrew launcher. Just follow the guide exactly and don't deviate.

Putting cubic ninja on your gateway card is like locking the car keys in your car. If you have a way of getting into your car without your keys, you don't need your keys. To use a game on your gateway card, you have to be in gateway mode already. If you have a way of getting into gateway mode without the cubic ninja, you don't need a cubic ninja rom. Also, updating in gateway mode BRICKS your console. Forget about your gateway card, lock it in a drawer until you're finished setting up A9LH.

I'm gonna say this. While you can get A9LH, please remember that it isn't an absolute requirement, as menuhax works with your Gateway as well as CFW just fine. Also, your Gateway doesn't have to be insignificant either, as you don't absolutely have to get rid of your emuNAND and update your sysNAND.

Doing any of these requires a bit of knowledge about what you're doing though. It's a lot easier to just follow instructions as written knowing you can't stuff anything up.

It would take knowledge to keep an emuNAND and not update sysNAND?
You need to know what parts are important and which can be skipped. You only need look at the number of posts of people doing things like updating with a cart instead of restoring NAND backup and bricking and other similar things, to see that it seems a bad idea to trust a new user to know what they can safely avoid doing and what they have to do. Considering so many vital parts sound optional.

Doesn't the updated sysNAND come after the A9LH is installed? This would mean he simply- doesn't do it.

just curious, how is the free cfw better than gw's cfw?
gw has the best cheat system, real time cheat search etc.
they both pirate games so, what else do you think there is?
language emulation? gw can do this, luma too now.
