E3 2023 has officially been canceled

asdsa,l;vf (1).png

After years of not taking place, 2023 was supposed to be the glorious return of E3. That is no longer the case, as the ESA has just officially canceled E3 2023. Despite PAX organizer Reedpop taking over the event, game companies kept adamantly announcing that they would be skipping E3, with Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony, SEGA, Ubisoft, and Tencent all pulling out months before the event was set to take place. For now, it looks like most will be showcasing their upcoming games in their own digital event, or in the recently established Summer Games Fest.

Sucks that E3 is likely never returning to the "big thing" it once was. I always wanted to go to E3 at least once. The livestreams that replaced it are convenient, but something just isn't the same. Especially since they're not all in one place, like some devs are a part of summer games fest, but others do their own streams, and it's hard to find a convenient schedule of when everything is.

For the limited limelight every company gets by competing with upcoming content in such a event, nobody wants excessive competition. RIP E3, you won't be missed

YouTube killed E3 years ago. Regardless, I hope a different live event will mature eventually.

One question. Was E3 offering money (directly) to host big 3 or asking money from them instead?

Nintendo's press conference was always the highlight of E3 for me, and they do a Direct around that time anyway and their Nintendo Treehouse thing which pretty much give me the same experience. So I don't think I'll miss E3.
That said, I was hoping I could go to E3 some day to experience it for myself since they opened it to the public, and it looks like I may never get that chance because I don't think E3 is coming back, which makes me kinda sad. E3 was one of my top 3 reasons to visit the US, but eh, I still have other reasons.
Realistically, going to E3 would've been many hours of waiting in queue every day and sore feet, with little time actually spent on the reasons why I wanted to go there in the first place, but I still think it would've been a once in a lifetime experience.

I'll miss the hype and excitement of E3. Especially the big three trying to outdo each others conferences. So many timeless moments. It truly was the gamers Christmas.

I understand why it's been cancelled but replacing the event with streams randomly scattered throughout the year just isn't the same.
Not to mention the lag that follows I remember one where so many people tuned in they could hardly keep up.

Sad to see that a show that was once so beloved by the gaming community has come to this. Can't say we didn't see it coming though. Won't be surprised if we soon learn that it's just never happening again.

*adds to list of things old people will have to explain to kids*

Not too long now and no one will even know what an "E3" was
"In them good ol' days we'd see game announcements, but then one day it turned to shit and everything changed."

That's the difference from the community vs corporate.

I'm so sad and shocked but then I think about it for a moment and I'm not at all surprised

It's been trashy for a hot minute but the death of something nostalgic always gets me

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

if i didn't want my games to be permanent, then i'd rent them

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
  • cearp @ cearp:
It's nice to not have to have a lot of physical things though, saves space

@rqkaiju2, Physical media is a great source for archiving your data, none of that cloud storage shiz.
