Do you ever play games in a language you don't know, without help from a guide?

Konami World. Way back then. haha.
That game is hard!

I usually like to think every Konami game up till PSX were just hard, but i mean back when my brother had super castlevania IV, i actually tried to beat that game, even using passwords and stuff. My brother has a Notebook full of passwords, he used to draw out the whole grid of Mega man 3 when he wanted to remember the password instead of just writing coordinates. :P

There was this on game I think is called hebereke on the nes, it had a pinguen, a frog, a ghost and some kid in a cat, i think In europe is called UFORIA, but i played the japanese version and beat it. :)

I always like the music in sunsoft games, it rivals konami, since they both used like some custom Audio chip driver to enhance the music, especially on nes, while the Famicom had better hardware.

I wish I had the capacity to learn Japanese but my language leaning abilities is only at level 1.

I did play the original Shin Megami Tensei for the Super Famicon but I didn't get too far in the game. I ended up beating the game with a translation though.

I agree with Veho.
All of the games I play are in English which isn't native to me.

Anyway, does it count when I say I played GTA SA in French just to mock the French?
I feel horrible for saying it...

The only game I played that was in another language was this body horror fetish game where people were connected to this one women and you had to shoot these dis-assembled fetuses or something. it was pretty gross. I was young when I first played it and I came back to it 2 years later. Still as horrific as I imagine it to be. It's called Gallshell if anybody's wondering.

I think of three games that fit the description...

-Leisure suit Larry. The original version. It was in English and had you typing in everything. I still have no idea how my friends and I even managed to DO anything (Christ...we were at the age where we could barely read :P ), but somehow, in the end, I/we finished it. (note: fooling the game into thinking we were adults was part of the challenge to us :P).
-some Japanese griddler arcade game. If you know griddlers (where you have to find a pixelated picture based on numbers on the side)...well...this is THAT game on crack. It had a timer that ran out pretty fast. I found it checking out MAME roms, and immediately fell in love with it. Too bad I can't even remember the name now.
-a Japanese tetris/puyo puyo clone on the wiiu. It...probably never even made it to the other side of the ocean.

Yeah, that game series didn't do well internationally, not even using big name titles like on sega making Dr. Robotnick Mean Bean Machiene on genesis and game gear, or kirby avalanche.... or kirby ghost trap for other regions. I never played the kirby one but since mean bean machiene was like on every sonic compilation disc from mega collection to sonic gems and sonic ultimate genesis collection, that game is hard. It throws you off by looking like tetris or super puzzle fighter but is just harder, and the opponets were unfair at time. Dare anyone to try playing that game, beat robotnik on hardes difficulty. Here the pass word I dare you. RED BEAN RED BEAN CLEAR BEAN YELLOW BEAN :glare:

The japanese games puyo puyo had some story but the graphics look like anime characters, i dunno what to say, puzzle games are just not easy to master.

I still play Battle Stadium D.O.N on my Wii and it's in Japanese-only, so while there are certain aspects translated and dubbed in English it still leaves me confused (i.e., what's that challenge that I won/lost). It's playable, that's what matters.

I did that my entire childhood. I couldn't read nor understand English until very late.
Eh, a Quebequian?

I've been playing Super Mario Sunshine off and on in German to get a better grip on the language. I wanted to kill something when I figured out that "Ananas" does not, in fact, mean "Bananas," it means "Pineapple"

What the fuck, English?

The best part of this is that it's ananas for all languages, except for English xD

Not if they are story-based. Back when I was a kid, I played a couple of games on the NES in Japanese since I only had access to a Famiclone, but those were mostly side-scrollers. I would never play an RPG in a language I don't fully understand - I consider it a complete waste of time that greatly lessens my experience. I'll happily play a translation or download a translation patch, otherwise I'll just skip the game entirely.

Talking about German, they also have very weird apples, like e.g. Apfelsinne.

I do, mainly for fighting games, beat em ups, and platformers. i don't have dbz super butoden 2 for super famicom but i did import dbz hyper dimension for super famicom not too long ago.

Also depending on the game the japanese versions of the games are cheaper like for instance the donkey kong country series. The area i am in the games cost $30 a piece but on amazon the super donkey kong series is about $15 for each game in the series.

Would like to get into importing for sega genesis/megadrive but i have to figure out which games are region locked and how to bypass the region locking.

I play Project DIVA Extend which hasn't been translated to American and beat the game. But that's because I already know a good amount of Japanese already.
Lucky for you project diva extend has an english translation patch now

Yea you right there, fallout 76 was a letdown, but it not that bad now, they have fixed slot of issues they had at launch. Biggest issue with Fallout 76 is its a pay to advance further type of game, which sucks
