Cross Buy is now possible between Nintendo's current consoles, don't get too excited though as this only applies for 1 game (Squid Odyssey). Your Consoles would need to be linked to the same Nintendo ID.

It's only available in EU as a cross buy title.

Will this be the start of a sony like game account? we have already seen Unified money, now an unified buy. How long untill we can have more cross-buy titles? How long till we have the liberty of using our accounts on other consoles?

From source said:
While this doesn't confirm cross buy is now going to become a thing, it does prove a few points - namely that any game not made by Nintendo can do this (hello indies) and it is completely within their own control to offer it.
Also, from an interview with Miyamoto:
Totilo: It's good to hear you say that, by the way. It's not really a question, but Super Mario Bros. 3 had just been released on Virtual Console in the States on 3DS and Wii U on the same day. You had to pay for it for each download. You couldn't get it for free [on the other platform]...

Miyamoto: Ohhh. That's right. I'm sorry.

Totilo: Maybe you guys can do that differently next time.

Miyamoto: I'll think about it.
So I kinda doubt Nin10doh will start doing this. GG for indies though I guess.

Huh, neat. I didn't even know it was possible with the current system. Now make it so that you can redownload your stuff on another console without issues pls.

Strange...it's certainly good news, but why does this appear from out of nowhere? Why is it that a third party (the game bakers?) uses nintendo's system the way their fans want it to be used while they themselves (ninten)don't?

And is it really a true cross buy game, as the article mentions? It's not the kind of game I would buy, but I'm still curious whether save states are actually shared between systems. To be honest, I think the deal is more exactly what it says: that you get a free version of the eshop game for the other system if you buy it for one system.

now to fix that fucking Console Locked content bullshit!....if I sell my Wii-U I SHOULD HAVE THE POWER to transfer my games AND Saves to the new console. Including if i BUY any games digitally. I shoudlen't have to send it in to Nintendo to transfer my games and saves. If I get a new PS3...all I fucking do is de-authorize my old unit. sign in to the new one and re-download all my content. I was burned because I had to sell my Wii-U due to financial problems and i found out that:

1. my nintendoID is permanently locked to that wii-u and can never be used again or be signed out
2. I can't transfer my save files at all.
3. all content i downloaded digitally [in this case free Lost World DLC] (thank god I didn't buy anything) is locked to that console. and I can't sign in on a new wii-u (if I got another one) and re-download it.

what the fucking bullshit.

Cross-buy: Buy it on WiiU, get it on 3DS.
Cross-save: Saves from either version can be sent to the other system to continue.
Cross-platform play: Both.

But these are just the terms that PSN uses, who knows what Nintendo will or will not do.

Not all games have either or both. (Like I just bought Atelier Rorona+ on PS3, I can send my save to the vita version, but I don't get the vita version with my purchase.)
So in EU, it is a "true cross buy" game :P
