There are some jap games for the 3ds.
Can we expect some translation projects with all the new possibilities lately?

Short version. Yes, yes you can. Game data can and has been demonstrated to run and be edited both freely and extensively, game binaries are also within the remit of the current hacks (not necessary for all translations but quite helpful for many and almost certainly most of the better ones you will have seen), the formats seen do not seem to be terribly different to what came before or otherwise outside the scope of understanding of those that could work up things from before.

To run them you will need a 4.5 3ds for the time being though, pending new types of hacks (smea's hacks when they get released and the new sky3ds and whatever else will not do it) or a downgrade method of course. Whether a flash cart will be necessary for it may change over the coming months but you will need a gateway or one like it right now.

What games are there that actually could use translations? (DQX is unsuitable because of lack of Western servers.)

From the top of my head:

Dragon Quest VII
Dragon Quest Monsters 1 & 2
Dragon Quest Rocket Slime 3
Labyrinth no Kanata
Medarot Dual
Medarot 7 and 8
Digimon World Re Digitize Decode (people translating the PSP version showed interest, but I'm afraid they have no exploitable 3DS)

I wish Dragon Quest VII would get tackled on, it's pretty much the biggest japanese 3DS title that S-E refuses to translate.

I would give my left ball to get EX Troopers translated.

I think it would be difficult as the game is in a manga comic style and like 90% of the in game and cutscene text is actually in images instead of plain text.

But I heard some Chinese coders made a plugin for displaying subtitles which could work.

Puyo Puyo Tetris is the one I would like to play a translation of. Even just having the menu translated would be great.
