Barring the smartass responses. >.> In theory yes, it can be rooted, but I have an LG Optimus V, and none of the guides or tutorials seem to work. Not sure what the issue is, but 4 methods later, the things is still not rooted.

Ever heard of rooting? Just google it. All of your answers will be solved.
Edit: I found the perfect website.

What the fuck is an andriod?

At least do it properly. Go facepalm yourself.

Rooting =/= jailbreaking

Rooting does nothing jailbreaking does

How about instead of linking him to random websites, just simply telling him what rooting is?

Rooting on Android is different from a jailbreak on iOS. Rooting is like the "Run as Administrator" command on Windows, it allows you to do certain processes that are otherwise not possible. A non-rooted Android device can be viewed as a standard user with certain administrator privileges, whereas a rooted device is like the administrator account. The process of rooting is different for every Android device, so you'll have to search up the specific process for your Optimus S.

After rooting, you can do a variety of different things, but the list is unlike the jailbreak for iOS (as the latter is a lot more limiting when not jailbroken). You gain access to modifying certain aspects of the Android OS, such as advanced themes, or installing a custom-made ROM to replace an old one. You also get an array of exclusive applications such as AdFree (an AdBlock for Android), and Titanium Backup (very helpful tool for backing up all your apps and data).

Here's a page about rooting the Optimus S that may or may not help you:

Thanks a bunch.

Minus all the sassiness and all the clarification you were clearly the most helpful.
But thanks everyone else too!

I have the same phone, I just downloaded Gingerbreak (it works on 2.2) and it worked. I used it to install Clockwork and a custom ROM. c;

android has been "hacked" since it debuted on the G1 and pretty much every phone since then has been unlocked for custom roms, about 80% of the time its by people at XDA

LOL

if you can find .apk (the app installer files)
they just install either from computer or a file explorer on the device
(you tick a box on phone setting allowing you to install 3rd party apps)
(phone will prompt you to tick if you haven't lol)

no need to root for that

but only use that method to install apps youve backed up that you have paid for

no dodgy dodgy

Well there are 2 way
1. Get .apk file somewhere from the internet(can't help you with that but torrents & warez sites are a good place to look) , put them somewhere in your phone memory card , install some free file explorer from the market (ES or ASTRO should work) & use them to navigate to where the .apk file is & install it.

2. Look for an alternative market that contains paid apps for free. I can't tell you names but just google the write words & you will find one. I should also warn you that those apps are usually slow & buggy so use them at your own risk.

I've got Blackmart Alpha installed on my Galaxy SII. It runs slow as shit so I download my apps via APKTOP.

Mods please delete if this isn't allowed
