I've always heard that you shouldn't update a jailbroken iPod/iPhone but no one has ever specified what happens. iOS 5 is coming out and I hate having to restore my iPod every single time there's an update because putting my music and apps back on takes almost all day. So is it safe or should I just restore it?

afaik updating your ipod touch, you will lose all your jailbreak stuff but will keep everything else that is legit (music, movies, pics, ebooks, apps, ect...)

I always just update it. So I's say it's pretty safe. it just leaves some stuff behind. But it doesn't cause issues. Unless your apps are pirated, obviously. But they just will refuse to load.

It's safe to update any device to ios 5 if its a supported device. the only problematic units are the Iphone 3G's with the ipad baseband 06.15.00 on them but they can be updated successfully too as I have one in this state on ios 5. took some effort....
