I'm looking at upgrading my raspberry pi 3 as I've just got a 4k tv and want to make the most of it. Can anyone recommend a box that is capable of smoothly playing x265 4k hdr content

4k and hevc are pretty demanding, its going to be expensive to say the least
You might be able to find an older generation nuc for not that much

Shield TV. No Dolby Vision yet though, but currently no rips utilize it anyways. Netflix, Vudu, etc. do though. Depends if HDR10 isn't enough for you...
You can also use it as a SOLID emulation box as well. Got mine on sale for $120, pricey otherwise. No regrets.

Get a Intel NUC. Then get Windows 10 (Since Intel have no hardware acceleration on Linux), get Kodi to autoboot by editing in the Registry, and tada! A HTPC, you can control it with Yatse on your Android. Works like a charm!

As someone coming from a Intel nuc (7 or 8th series cpu).
Hdr support from intel is abysmal...

Do yourself a favor and grab a shield (and I'm really not fond of nvidia...)
