so I've been away from the modding scene for a long time, and last time I was here I remember there being an a bit of a scare as Nintendo was banning people and or bricking systems if they connected to the internet, and I was wondering if it was safe to connect my 3ds back up again

There is virtually no ban risk if you don’t do stupid thinks like
  • Cheating online.
  • Playing leaked games before official release.
Also Nintendo will most likely not brick the console on purpose (although they have threatening text before each update). This would be highly illegal in many countries

However, before updating your official firmware, make sure you cfw installation is up to date.
