SPECULATION ONLY!!!

Obviously nothing is confirmed yet but it seems that instead of brick code, they are running some sort of hard core detection that wont allow an update if it detects a clone card.

Not trying to start rumors or anything here just opening a nice discussion :)

Not too sure of that , I don't think clones would have a problem releasing a new clone based on gateway capable of using firmware 2.0 lol

but i thought the clones couldn't update?
iirc the jtag header on the clones is not connected...or atleast connected only to the back of the PCB....maybe some hackery to the card might work....but still im sure gateway check the card before they just apply their update (would anyone really trust a release from the clones again anyway?)

I'm waiting for the omega's launcher to be ripped open and use a jtag programmer to update my 3dslink :P The clones have to hurry and get 4.0 out lol
(stupid idea, i wonder if soldering the jtag pins on the clone cards to the same pads where the gateway's are would make any diference in running gw's launcher... probly not ^^)

Or you know you could sell your 3DSLink and add 10-20 bucks more on it and buy a gateway?...

I'm sure it would take at least a month for clones to get carts that could run omega out there. That is assuming they can change the software and have it work with their new hardware really fast. I'm sure Gateway would not make it easy to change the code. The update process probably checks the whole launcher code before running anything.

I meant releasing a new card altogether. A newer clone for the same price than the ones available right now with access to latest update ? people would buy it
tbh i think gateway achieved what they want to achieve, there will always be some people just looking for the cheapest option no matter what, but im sure most people at this point wouldnt really consider the clones an option

No, the cheap solution is gone.

i wouldnt count on that the clones could also find another way to run this support i would say that they are trying to find a way as we speak and are trying to get ahold of someone like smealum or yellow8 or anyone that has experience with the 3ds hacking scene and working something out...the chinese mafia is a harsh world and i would be suprised if the clones didnt find a way to make this happen eventually (i own a gateway and im running omega so i could care less) =D also omega DID infact leak its all over the net...i just cant link anyone because its against gbatemp rules sorry

so we had a chance to look at today's public, final release. first of all, they've changed up their launcher a bit in terms of the rop protection. they also made big changes to the important arm payload. there seems to be no more bricking code. it's also been almost completely redone. there doesn't seem to be a mips-ish virtual machine anymore either.

Yeah... I noticed that... They probably decided it wasn't worth the time/effort as it didn't stop people reversing their bricking code :P

I would not even consider farting on an MT-Card now due to Gateways recent new updates. I doubt anyone would even consider buying any other card now I don't think tbh I would either and even if I did have an MT-Card and not a GW I would probably buy one now though due to recent events. Well of course if another make ie MT-Card found out an exploit for it too work on new firmware, well then that is a different story that would sent them into hyper league probably!!!

I lack the know how to disassemble the launcher, so, is there any chance of extraction of the fpga update to try it on a clone? or is that just a waste of time? :P

Wat.

While you're churning out bright ideas why not try extracting apple seeds to grow an orange tree.

I don't think it is ever recommended to try an update or another card.. It'll give more problems than it is worth. Honestly, I think it is awesome that Gateway came up with this new idea to "hopefully" prevent clones in using their stuff.

Is it piracy if it was released for free? Not in my opinion, but I also think it's not piracy if buying it isn't owning it, and it's not piracy if you can't buy it from the original creators anymore.
