Can the Vita be hacked for a start?

And if so, can it run PSP ISO's extracted from UMD's or PS2 games?

If so, how do I do this?

Thanks!

It's never been able to play PS2 games.

There is official support for PSP games, but only those bought online.

There has been some homebrew, but they rely on online shop games and Sony is pulling+patching those exploits within hours sometimes, and even then it only gives you a limited PSP-mode (usermode homebrew only).

Total Noob's solution gives you kernel access, so it's a CFW equivalent for the Vita's PSP sandbox. That said, yes, you gotta hunt down an exploit first.

Did that ever actually, you know, come out in a usable form?

'Cause if not then it's not relevant to the OP, who I'm sure is more interested in what's actually possible. :P

So was I thinking of something else that had the game name leaked early and patched?
Probably. I'm not sure I'm familiar with what you're referring to. In any case, all the latest exploits involving eCFW were kernel exploits - first a usermode exploit was executed and then the rights were elevated, allowing for eCFW installation. This method still works in 2.00 and 2.01, but the name of the game involved has not yet been released.

In order to get the next exploit, I would thinks that he would need to download the exploited game from PSN first (once named, before pulled/patched by Sony). In order to use PSN, he would need to update first, right?

So there's little point in holding back from updates unless you happen to already have an exploitable game (unlikely).

Yup - that's entirely correct. Besides, there are already videos on wololo showing an exploit working on 2.01, so yeah - we all might as well stay up-to-date.

for People like me and others who have not got a eCFW compatable game yet, this is true, but for those that can already run eCFW, its bad as you would need to buy a new game again and try to not miss the window to get it.

Nope.

Also what's so bad about buying a game to play other games? It's not like the exploitable games have cost that much so far compared to the price of the console?

It does over time. it has the same effect as Microtransactions. a 5-20$ every now and then is nothing compared to the Vita but after 5 times of doing it. you have spent 25-100$ buying exploit games depending on their price. a little over 1/3 of the cost of a vita.

Then again, how much do you know of the original PSP hacking and how it was done regarding the price point? Wololo.net has a good post regarding that too.

It may not be good to buy a new game every time an exploit is released, but it sure is the only way to get an exploit running on the current PSVita. The PSP hacking changed when the private keys for the PS3 were released since the PSP keys were bundled with the results of that hack. Before that, it was pretty much a public demo not via PSN or a game with an exploitable feature. Just like the Wii and pre-Letterbomb hacking.

but with PSP and Wii hacking, the games were usually available on disk/UMD so you could rent one to exploit the console, i rented Twilight Princess back when the Twilight hack came out. now, since the games are digital only, the exploits until now were focusing on full games and not mini's making it expensive to buy a game since you can not rent digital games and sony charging near or at full price for digital copies.

I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
never had that i don't think

do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
