Backing up my 3DS digital games on unmodded New 3DS XL to put on a modded New 3DS?

Just my luck. The 2019/2020 R4 Gold Pro listing I ordered from gave me another 2021 one. What the heck!?

I'm getting fed up with trying to get a ntrboot compatible card...so my question now is: if I was to just mod my New 3DS XL to back up all my digital games and saves, is it possible to revert it back to stock firmware somehow after I'm done?
Yes - you can follow the Uninstall CFW guide once you're done doing what you need to do. However, that wouldn´t necessarily decrease any ban risk because if Nintendo were flagging consoles by installed titles then your console would be flagged the moment that homebrew software is installed to home menu, regardless of whether you uninstall CFW later on or not. The uninstall CFW guide is also quite cumbersome, as it aims to wipe out any potential remnant of CFW from any setup (whereas your console would have a much more 'vanilla' setup to begin with and therefore steps relating to DS mode or region changing would be kind of a waste because those wouldn´t have been things that you've done).

If you're dead-set on keeping the console as 'vanilla' as possible, I would recommend the following:

- Install custom firmware via Seedminer -> unSAFE_MODE (PicHaxx requires downloading Pokemon Picross and thus an NNID, which adds an additional variable that we don´t need)
- Once boot9strap is installed (at the end of the unSAFE_MODE page), do not continue to Finalizing Setup - instead, install GodMode9 and perform whatever backups you want to do (as was advised with ntrboot, you may not want to accept the "Essentials backup" thing as that writes system-unique files to an unused part of NAND, which obviously wouldn´t occur from a stock environment)
- Once you're done making all your backups, run the Safety Test script to make absolutely sure that uninstalling CFW will not brick your console (you should boot to home menu easily since hypothetically there should have been no changes to NAND), then run the "uninstall hax" script via GM9Megascript

As others have told you on this thread though, it's a lot less cumbersome to just keep the console modded. There's effectively no benefit to keeping it unmodded, especially as warranty and repairs begin to wind down with end of life.

Thanks. For your suggested method, would that mean I wouldn't be able to install and launch Checkpoint to back up save files? I would still need to back up certain save files for physical games that utilize the SD card to maintain save data.

You could launch Homebrew Launcher via download play takeover and launch checkpoint from there. The goal would be to avoid installing any title to home menu since that would be what would hypothetically be "flagged".

Alternatively, you could decrypt the data on the SD (and thus save data) with ninfs and 3ds-save-tool, then extract the save data manually.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
