As Covid-19 takes its toll on the industry, SEGA will sell off most of its arcade business

Many businesses are facing adverse effects due to Covid-19, including those within the gaming industry, and perhaps doing worst of all are arcades. Sega Sammy--the parent company behind both SEGA's home gaming and arcade sectors--has faced "remarkable" losses during 2020, resulting in the company deciding to sell off a majority of its shares in its arcade entertainment subsidiary. Next month, SEGA will sell 85.1% of its ownership of Sega Entertainment Co. to a Japanese business called Genda. Following the sale, the existing arcade systems throughout Japan will still retain the SEGA branding, and SEGA itself will still develop arcade games, but the ownership of those arcades will belong to Genda.

Who or what is Genda? I've never heard of such a company.
Was curious there myself
One of the news sources had their domain as
https://genda.jp/
Most appear to be saying they are a Japanese arcade rental company (if the machines cost several thousand then a lot of arcade owners will just rent instead).

Did a whois on their website
Code:
[Domain Name] GENDA.JP

[Registrant] Midas Entertainment Co., Ltd.

So a domain registered back in August. Don't know if that makes them just a random spinoff company (some companies will give assets to other companies), late to this website lark or actually straight up new.

Midas entertainment however
https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/midas-entertainment
Says
https://midasent.jp/
Very similar logo (this might be a rebrand then) and "Founded Date May 1, 2018"
Site today redirects but
https://web.archive.org/web/20190801022637/https://midasent.jp/

Impressive list of customers but not sure what that means in this instance.

Founder/manager seems to be some Goldman Sachs former investment type. On the archive link then they had some 2 million USD if I have got the conversion right, not sure what that means for this as various lines could be tapped and there could be hidden partners somewhere in the mix.

One of the news things there mentions a joint venture on the US side of things with round one corporation
https://www.round1.co.jp/company/company/info_eng.html
They are a games vendor in Japan, been going since the 80s apparently.
Also some stuff in China.

Not sure that shines any more light on anything really, could be a jumping off point. To me it sounds more like sold off to some investment group, albeit one with a history in games and knowledge of the field.[/Email][/quote]

I think you guys a misreading what's happening. SEGA isn't leaving the arcade business, they're just no longer going to be operating arcade centers anymore
