AR glasses manufacturer Nreal announces AR cloud gaming ‘Steam on Nreal' feature and AR Jam competition

Nreal, the company behind AR glasses Nreal Light and the newly-released Nreal Air, has announced a new feature that enables gamers to stream PC games on these AR devices. Named Steam on Nreal, the feature enables gamers to stream Steam games from their PC to Nreal's AR glasses. As it is currently in beta stage, Steam on Nreal is not optimized for all Steam games, but titles like DiRT Rally and the entire Halo series are supported.

"We are excited to be the first to bring Steam into AR," said Peng Jin, co-founder of Nreal. "The beta release is meant to give people a glimpse into what is possible. After all, AAA games should be played on a 200" HD screen and they should be played free of location restrictions."

This is not Nreal's first foray into AR cloud gaming as owners of their devices already have access to Xbox Cloud Gaming through browser access inside Nebula, Nreal's 3D AR launcher.

In addition to the Steam on Nreal launch, the company also announced that they will be hosting an AR Jam starting June 20th. With more than $100,000 in cash prizes, the month-long competition aims to attract developers for creating applications in the following categories: at-home fitness; art; games; video, for taking advantage of Nebula’s multi-screen functionality; and Port, for converting existing apps into an AR environment. There are also three bonus categories: Multiplayer/Social/Networks; NFT Galleries; and Students.

Winners in each category will be awarded cash prizes, with the first places winning US$10k. Some creative entries will also win cash prizes while honorable mentions will be provided with a free Nreal Light Dev kit. Details of the AR Jam can be found at developer.nreal.ai.

Are there any apps you'd like to see on AR glasses or would you like to play your Steam library on such devices?

Anybody can explain me the difference between Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality?
VR blocks your physical environment and completely immerses you in a virtual environment (think Half-Life: Alyx). With AR, you can still see your physical environment but it superimposes virtual elements to it (think Pokemon Go).

Until AR can be used with normal every day glasses, it will never kick off imo

Anything that makes it difficult for normal glasses wearers to use your product really. Some of us are so blind we can’t even see/read text in VR without also shoving our glasses in the headset and scratching the lenses

For I, I'd love to see the first version of "regular/everyday" AR glasses
Is it gonna be like the very first portable cellphone? Huge?
Is it gonna be like the first tv? Black and white? Low res?
Is it gonna be like the first car? Unsafe to use?

I would love to see an attachment that goes on my glasses. That'd be cool. I can imagine it's gonna be a bit until we get something that's light, powerful, and low-profile where it doesn't look like an eyesore if I'm out and about. I'm not too blind without glasses but it would certainly help me with VR games to see the finer details since my glasses cannot fit in my Quest 2 comfortably even with the glasses spacer.

Both the Nreal Light and Nreal Air include prescription lens inserts that are designed to be worn with the AR glasses (you'll need to get the actual lenses from a local opticians' though). As far as AR glasses go, these two are among the most low-profile out there, as shown in the images in the linked articles. I wouldn't wear them as my main glasses though as the front lens are tinted and aren't really handy for indoor use.

This guy gets it. The first versions of anything are going to be anything but perfect, but that does not mean we should already write it off before it actually gets off the ground. Otherwise this technology will never develop and advance further when there are people already calling it dead in the water before it has a chance to prove itself.
