My Wii U has had this error since early 2020.
i don’t have any experience in soldering, but what equipment/components do I need to do the fix?
also, could someone precisely explain how to do the fix (the images dont really explain anything)

thanks in advance

actually, i have a better request:

could someone make a list of instructions (preferably with images) that I could show to a specialist so that they could do the repair for me without accidentally messing up my console?

the uploader already explained everything in minute details its clearly mentioned 2 filters who are probably at fault in this error everything is mentioned in post along with motherboard pictures where those filters are located ...it seems you arent into soldering experience ill advice you not to proceed yourself instead give it to some repair guy show him this post along with those 2 filters on motherboard he will check it himself and bridge the filter or change the filter accordingly .as i said .there is no rocket to understand this post i dont know why you are confused the guy who posted it clearly mentioned every details he also uploaded pictures of motherboard where those 2 filters are located all one have to do is open the system and change those filters or bridge the faulty one with wire in parallel

Asking for somebody else to do is indeed a better idea than attempting this yourself if you never soldered before.
As with all skills: Soldering needs practicing. A lot of practicing. You will mess up things at first, no doubt. If you want to try it, get some scrap electronics and some practicing kits. Get a feeling for how the stuff acts (there a plenty of tutorials out there for getting started).

SMD (surface mounted device) soldering on tiny points of a device you care for is not the way to begin. Really, those things are absolutely minuscule.

Somebody with good soldering experience should be able to do it with the pictures and information given in the first post.

Good luck!

Hello, here with another report
i had to open my 32 GB Wii U after long time of fixing it because it wasn't giving any display through the HDMI and i noticed something...pretty familiar down the HDMI port lines
They also have filters...labeled CM7 and CM8, 4-line filters, and guess what? one of them didn't had full continuity
So i did the same thing i did with the drive filters, except harder because these filters are 4 lines instead of 2 and now i have display back
It seems ALL of the filters in the console are really bad quality, so take that in count

Did it use the same filters as the one posted in the OP?

Just want to double check because my hdmi has this same exact issue

nope, they are a 4 line model instead of a 2 line model

i mean, i guess maybe lining 2 up of the 2 line model could work?
but what i did was take out the filter and solder direct lines anyways

Hello all... My Wii U does not have the IC that the previous owner removed (and lost). Is there any way to get the console to boot up without the 160-1402 error screen? Maybe some way to render his entire optical drive unusable?

Take a look at here: https://gbatemp.net/threads/should-i-fix-my-half-bricked-wii-u.632208/page-2
You need de_fuse , minute_minute now.
BTW,, If you decide to use DE_fuse to fix 160-1400 , it's best to first confirm the emmc chip of the console. If it's hynix, you need to consider whether to repair it or not.
I guess it can work by completely disabling the drive through the usage of a hardmod, as you mentioned in your post, for completely hopeless consoles
People just need to be aware that it also requires soldering and more materials than a simple piece of wire

disabling the drive
Disabling drive is the last choice, @Jehmyson said:"My Wii U does not have the IC that the previous owner removed (and lost)" , If the "ic" meaning CM9 CM10, he can still try connecting with wires. If the "ic" meaning IC inside the Disk drive, I guess de_fuse is the only way, or some cute person can write a recovery menu that can set SEEPROM.

That's right, is the IC inside the drive that communicates with the motherboard. It was removed and there is no possibility of getting it again. It's been a few years he's waiting for the day I'm going to fix it with someone's help. I think that day has come.

Another success story! I did this on a Wii U that was being sold cheap for parts because the drive didn't work. Tested the paths before the repair and three out of four were open circuit. Didn't seem to make sense replacing old burned out parts with the exact same thing that would burn out in the future, so I followed the lead of others and just hotwired across the pads. Thank goodness for my microscope, and thank you to @tqhoang and @Drakkar Blackblaze for documenting the fix!

Hello and good day! Thank you for this fix! took my Wii U apart and sure enough CM9 was open on the inside lane.

I removed and overlayed wires to replace the filter, but after hitting it with heat I read no resistance across C157, C158, C159, C160. what are these supposed to read? I think I have more parts to replace.

They are coupling capacitors that do not require resistance or continuity

here i am with another update, today i wanted to check on my Wii U after a bit of not playing it, and again, i had no video signal, so here we go, opening the damn thing again, this time, the other filter in the HDMI line was faulty, so i had to remove it too, and add direct lines to fix it, this time i snapped some photos to show the procedure

IMG_20240530_191036.jpg

here you can see my previous fix on CM7 already covered with solder mask, this time CM8 was failing, one of the lines didn't had continuity

usbcamera20240530202340.jpg

Microscope picture snapped while bridging CM8, it looks messy i know, but when the solder points are sooooooo tiny this is the best i can do with my level of expertise

usbcamera20240530202351.jpg

here's how CM7 looks in case people are curious, probably a bit more messy than CM8 because i didn't had the microscope or precision soldering iron i have now

IMG_20240530_202841.jpg

size comparison of the work site with the blade of my exacto knife, its absolutely minuscule

i can confirm doing this fixed the display output, but now my Gamepad is throwing a 165-3423 error, which seems there's absolutely no info about, thanks Nintendo, for making this ordeal as long and grueling as can be :nayps3::nayps3:
