topic. I was using avira, malwarebytes, and spybot. avira has a lot of ads, and the exception thing seems to be broken. malwarebytes costs money. oh, I'm looking for the best, free software btw. and, spybot had a weird bitdefender error upon restarting my laptop. I tracked down that error to sypbot after some research. I've since uninstalled the software, and the error hasn't reappeared. thanks!

Malwarebytes' free version is the cake, the premium is just icing, cake's most important and it does everything needed and well. That being said, its best paired with an antivirus, and I've recently stuck with the baked in Defender, which also does its job in serviceable manner.

there's a free version of malwarebytes? I have a version (might be the premium) that only has a 14-day trial.
They started "forcing" a 14 day trial on new installs instead of letting you just choose the free version, but it is free. After 14 days it'll revert to the free version that doesn't allow always-on stuff, but you can still do full scans and stuff.

Windows Defender is okish, it'll take care of most common stuff and is about all you need if you're not an idiot. Just don't go clicking on every fake download button on filesharing sites and downloading "XYZ_celebrity_totally_nude_promise_not_a_virus!.mp4.exe" you'll be fine.

Nothing.
Also turn off Windows Defender, it's a pain in the ass.
The day of spooky viruses, malware and spyware are basically gone.

I suggest keeping the free version of malwarebytes around and scan your computer every month or two just in case. I think its been 6 or 7 years since I had a virus except once or twice I downloaded something very obviously stupid and for some reason did it anyway...in which malwarebytes cleaned it in less than 2 minutes with minimal effort and 0 damage.

Use Windows Defender and HerdProtect together. Trust me on this

Otherwise, make sure you don't use 3rd party antiviruses together, some of them will actually "fight" with each other and cause Windows to crash if they're running at the same time

Dunno. MBAM and Defender is amazing.

malwarebytes and windows defender it is then. I'll uninstall avira when I'm at that computer again. the one I'm typing on is about on its last legs which is why I bought a new laptop. this laptop is on windows 7, but the new one is on windows 10, so I wasn't sure how well everything worked.
