Hello,
I have been out of the game for quite sometime (last hacking on wii & PSP). I own the first model of 3DS with fw 10.3.0 always used with no sort of hacking. When I discovered that the hacking was available I bought a 3dsXL from my nephew (he got it for Christmas 3 y ago and never used). This 3ds xl was with an r4i 2014 (tested and works on both the 3dsxl and my 3ds, not to mention my dslite)., full of NDS games, with OFW 4.5.0. I already eliminated all the NDS except the one I owned already.
I want to use one of the 2 for modding and keep the other, for now, on the OFW. I have a tons of questions, for which I tell you thanks in advance, but I am a fast learner and if you can address me to the right topics, guides, I will put my efforts to do all quickly. My doubts are:
- Which of the 3ds would you suggest me to use for modding? Note that the main thing I would use backup, I am interested into using emulators save files on the 3ds, streaming/record gameplay from the 3ds, potentially play online, using cheats (I knw many do not like, but I use cheats only in single, never online, and mostly for Pokemon to get the event Pokemon I missed). Also note that on my old 3ds I have my Ninendo ID (not really sure what it does on a 3ds) and I do not want to risk it, so I would need to pass it to the 3ds xl if I mod the old one.
- Which CFW should I use, could you link me the right step by step noob proof guide?
- In terms of NDS games, is it still good to keep the R4i? Also for the R4i, what can it do beside playing games? saves etc.?
- Can I connect the 2 3ds to trade pokemon (from backup to cartdrige, from R4i to console etc.)? Also can I access Pokebank with the R$i games or with backups (omega ruby sun etc.)?
- In terms of online playing? Is there any risk? Can I connect? the eshop? what is the risk of bans? what should I do to avoid them?
- The 3ds I do not mod, shjould I update to the latest fw or keep it?
- Once I install the CFW, what about the updates?
SOrry for so many questions, but again I am a fast learner.
Thanks.
1. I would suggest using the N3DS for CFW because of your list of things you want to do. Most emulators only run well on the N3DS, streaming is only available on N3DS. Also, an NNID really doesn't matter. You won't be banned as long as you don't cheat online or play online in games that haven't been released in your region. Otherwise if you do incur a ban while on CFW, it is normally just an online ban and can be reversed on your end.
(The N3DS will be easy to hack if it has a browser, the O3DS would be easier to hack because it's on a more compatible firmware; the firmware won't matter much if your R4 can support NTRbootHaX).
2. I would recommend using Luma CFW, as it is noob friendly, works with the latest exploits, has many features and is constantly updated.
3. I would honestly still keep the R4 for DS games. Why not? Once you have CFW you can install forwarders on your homemenu for DS games (They look like the games are legit installed but when loaded, redirect to your flashcard) Also, if your card has the right chip it can be used to install NTRBootHaX which can install Boot9Strap (the latest irreversible exploit) on ANY 3DS/2DS console on any firmware and recover most software bricks.
4. You can trade pokemon between two of your consoles with "backup" games yes. Backup 3DS games on CFW work no different than legally downloaded games from the eShop. Games on flashcards do not support ingame wi-fi, not to mention servers for most DS games are discontinued. Pokemon bank will support your backup 3DS games, pokemon bank does not support flashcard games, you need retail cartridges of Gen 4/5 games and poketransporter to use the bank with DS games.
5. You can use your console the exact same way; Online is no different on a console with CFW. As long as you take my advice from before and don't cheat online or play out of region games online early, you should be fine. There is also a section in the guide I will link you to taking extra precautions to avoid the console showing certain titles being "played".
6. That's entirely up to you. Leaving it outdated with leave it limited in terms of online connectivity and playing new games. Updating it (unless you use NTRBootHaX) will prevent it from being able to be modded later if you ever decide.
7. Once CFW is installed, it cannot be removed with a system update. Period. There is no risk to updating your CFW console through the regular method in system settings. However, sometimes an app or program may require an update before it will work on the newest firmware

If you have any other questions, or something I missed (that was a lot haha) don't hesitate to ask.
