*sigh* They never, ever advertise a sysnand-only setup in their instructions, its completely user's fault if they decide to remove emunand. With emunand its safe and you won't lose a9lh.
In fact you can disable firm protection on any other cfw, update your sysnand and get the same result.

I don't think it's dead per se, but it is dying in the sense that not having current firmware support for two updates now is hardly bringing in new users. They are however still "working" on it so previous buyers just have to wait, which isn't really feasible IMO considering the length of time. It would just seem to me that they have no priority ( I don't pretend to know how the technicals work or anything, just my observation that single freeware devs push updates almost in real-time, yet the Gateway team takes months to do whatever).

Also, I would say that maybe the guide itself should add a warning about using A9LH on sysnand with Gateway. The actual Gateway site specifically says to use Emunand because of their lack of firm protection. But I feel like it's an honest mistake thinking A9LH+Sysnand+Gateway would be a be fine, considering people think it's A9LH protecting their FIRM vs the CFW their using. Either in my personal opinion, Gateway may have set a precedent long ago but it is no longer even remaining current. If you don't already have one, it's not worth it to get one unless you REALLY enjoy not having to install your 3DS titles and love using private headers.

TL;DR: Gateway is dying as I don't see it bringing in new customers, but it's not dead since they still offer support/updates; even if they take a really long time.
