Nintendo Switch Sales Across Europe Are Largest In Nintendo Hardware History

TG9nby5qcGc=.jpg
Nintendo have just confrmed that the launch of the Switch and sales of Zelda are the largest in Nintendo's history, for both hardware and software.

Here is Nintendo:

We can confirm that, across Europe, Nintendo Switch sold more in its launch weekend than any other Nintendo hardware in history.

Launch title The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has not only been bestowed with some of the highest review scores in gaming history, it's also the biggest-selling Nintendo launch title ever in Europe, even outselling Wii Sports in first weekend sales.

And all this in March – traditionally a quiet time for the games industry.

Nintendo didn't release any specific numbers with this press release.

where are nintendo basing this BS from, how can it be the best its had when it claims the switch has managed to double the sales that the wii u had in the UK.

yes well done bravo compare your sales to a failed console.

in the Uk it claimed to have sold 80k units.

now lets all remember that the switch is not just a home console, it is also their next portable console merged into one.... so no new handheld console to replace the 3DS.... the switch is both home/handheld consoles.

the 3DS during the first week if i am correct sold 113k units in the UK, now that is far less considering the switch is both.

so basing on past figures.
switch = 80K
=============TOTAL 80K

wii u = 40K (if its true the switch doubled the sales that the wii u had)
3DS = 113K
=============TOTAL 153K

so how is the switch sold better, when it has failed to reach the sales that the last home console/portable console acheived, after all you combined the consoles markets (home/portable) into one, so the sales should too.

either way, the switch falls short of what the XBX1/PS4 sold during the same period in the UK.

so this is just BS press from nintendo to try prove the system is not a failure, sit back and wait as i have said before launch and did with the wii u, this will not be the savior nintendo dream it to be.

i'll wait and see before i buy one, it's the first Nintendo console i didn't buy at launch day :/
Mostly because i have other priorities for now :)

Think i'm growing out of all this console stuff must have at launch hype :D, Almost 50, so time to slow down and do it at a more sit and wait thing ;)
(Something my wife was happy to hear, not my kids (3 girls))

I had it in my hands and was in waiting line at launch day to pay, my wife was going on about when i would renew my WiFi stuff at home, so i put it back and bought a whole new WiFi setup and fixed that issue at home first, because she was right, the old WiFi setup started to have it's problems and didn't fit demands needed at home anymore. (Ow she told me i didn't have to put it back, but i know what she was saying behind the other talk ;) )

that is my problem with this console, yes everyone is like WOW this is nintendo again innovating (yet copying whats already on the market), currently its boasting great sales, yet you look back and its not that great and consider competition sales.

when this WOW factor dies down, devs will see it for what it is and soon the support will dry out and then (for me) be left with another nintendo system with nothing i want to play.

(note: haven't read most replies...just replying to the OP)

Well...it's a nice start, but especially without sales numbers it really is way too early to draw any conclusions.

-it's march. While conventional wisdom marks october->december or June as the best release months, the very fact that hardly any AAA-titles come out might end up in more sales than usual
-Zelda is (and remains) a classic go-to for quality gaming. It might very well be that some people have put off getting a wiiu entirely because it would be on the switch
-apart from Zelda, the wiiu has been dead for some time. While this was true for the wii as well, this time it'll be a replacement for both the wiiu and the 3DS.

I'm not sure what to think of the reviews on this thing. I may be reading into things a bit too much because I expected this, but most of the praise goes to the mobile aspect of the thing. However, this is the part that nintendo is currently the least prepared for (fuck...even indie developers working on the thing understand their audience better!). As it stands, I'd say this is the best mobile gaming platform on the planet. The question is: will they exploit that market to the fullest or will they dwiddle on until being forced to move by competition? (like...the smach z) :unsure:

I'm pretty sure most of those sales are scalpers who go to sell the console and dock.

When I say and, I mean them as two different items they will sell for 300+ dollars.

the likes on flea bay who pre order just to sell off at stupid amounts.

you'd think nintendo would make more units to cover its demand, i mean in the uk it sold 80K yet the PS4 during same period sold i think 200K+, clearly sony was able to make more units to at least meet demand.

but we know nintendo don't do this, they like to keep people eager for it, keeps the hype/demand going, if stores are out of stock they think people see it as "well it must be worth getting if its always out of stock, so i want one".

I reall hope it matches the sales of Wii. Probably needs a price cut to achieve that. Also I think ports/sequels of popular Wii U games will really boost Switch sales. Hyrule Warriors 2, anyone?
And of course, Zelda BOTW Game of the Year edition (fingers crossed)

Can someone explain to me how is this possible?

The Switch has only 9 games you can play at the moment. 9 games. I don't like Zelda games, so I look at the other games available and...wow, there's NOTHING I could play on this thing. Awesome.

You could argue the same with the 3DS and the Wii U, but all Nintendo consoles have been compatible with the previous gen since the Game Boy Color, so all the way back to the beginning of handheld games. I wasn't expecting the Switch to have backwards compatibility, but I was hoping for more games other than "ZELDA!!1". Yeah, that game sucks for some people, believe it or not.

It's so mind blowing. If you were to have such a tight line-up, why not having at least ONE killer app that everyone will enjoy? Why not a Super Mario? Or even a remake of Mario Maker? Why not a new WarioWare? Hell, why not getting into the mobile gaming and remove all the stupid microtransaction? Why not making a Clash of Clans clone that's actually fun without micro transactions?

Seriously, can someone explain to me?
1) The Gamecube released after the Gameboy Color and was not backwards compatible.
2) There is no single game that absolutely everybody without exception loves. Zelda is about as close as you'll get, though. You don't like it? That's too bad, but you are the outlier here. It is, in fact, the killer app that most everyone will enjoy.

tl;dr: Not everything is made to appease you specifically. Deal with it.

I didn't know the GameCube was a handheld. Who knew, right?

Also, Zelda is not a killer app. It's loved by many, not by everyone. A new SMB would have been a better choice for a starting line-up.

Maybe you should read everything rather than skip the parts you don't like.

"all Nintendo consoles have been compatible with the previous gen"
Huh, I didn't realize that all consoles were handhelds.

And yes, Zelda is a killer app. And more importantly, it is a system seller. I don't know how many people are going to buy a console just to play yet another New Super Mario Bros entry versus the number of people who will buy a console just to play Zelda. But it's pretty moot, anyways, since Mario is coming later this year.

Also, I didn't skip anything. I chose not to respond to some of your continued whining in the post. When you call out Zelda as not being the killer app that the Switch needs, but then go on to list Wario Ware and Clash Of Clans as what the Switch really needs, I just silently shook my head.

Learn to read, thanks <3

I'm not even gonna reply to the rest of your post. Me saying that Nintendo needs to put Clash of Clans on the Switch. OK kid. See you.

Is this your first console release? 9 games isn't unusual. You should check out the ps4 and xbox one release lineup for a bit better context.

The handhelds are mainly backward compatible, but generally only one generation (the exception being the first GBA version). The original DS was backward compatible, but the dsi was not. gameboy advance was backward compatible, but not all iterations. 3ds played ds games, but nothing else. This was just to give the console a boost, to ensure a smoother transition.

The consoles only started becoming backward compatible at the wii, as it's just a gamecube with a higher clock (more or less), and the wii u is the same as those two, just faster and tri-core (more or less). The wii U was wii backward compatible, but not gamecube (Despite being perfectly capable).

so why not the switch? because it was either limit themselves to hardware that'd play 3ds games, or focus on creating new hardware that accomplished what they needed. The system is different enough, hardware backward compatibility isn't really possible. They may try emulation, or partial emulation, but that's going to take a while to create emulation that doesn't suck (just like sony and microsoft are doing, and even years later their offerings are limited).

and zelda is almost always rated highly, and always gets a lot of sales. Depending on how you define "killer app", zelda fits the bill from monetary, perception, and impact perspectives.

Hm. A valid point mentioned before... Scalpers... Granted those desperate enough would buy the stock in the first place.. But still. You buy it from a scalper, the chances of you being able to return it because of a defect are slim. Hmmm

Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aimé says that the Switch, which launched on Friday, is the company’s hottest-selling console in the U.S. — at least in its first 48 hours.

“Unit sales for Nintendo Switch on Friday and Saturday exceeded any system launch Nintendo has had in the U.S., ever,” Fils-Aimé says
“For the first two days, Nintendo Switch outsold the Wii, it outsold Nintendo DS, it outsold Nintendo 3DS, it outsold Nintendo 64 — it outsold every system Nintendo of America has launched in the Americas, and I'm talking specifically for the U.S,” Fils-Aimé says. “When I say it is our best launch ever, it is truly our best launch ever, looking at the first two days.”

I think the switch is going to beat everything in the next month :)

Not with the shortage and list of issues.

Here is Japan
The Nintendo Switch has become the Japanese firm's fastest selling console in many years - and possible ever - according to several reports.

Nintendo will not reveal official sales figures until April.

But games magazine Famitsu says more than 330,000 units were sold in the first three days in Japan, way more than its previous console the Wii U.

you cant boast you have had the best sales in history then release no figures....

yet we know what its sales are in the UK and compared to the wii u it had doubled, but thats not something to brag about..... it should beat sales.

but what nintendo are not stating is that this clone console is in fact two markets in one, so lets have the sales figures of your 3DS and WII U combined please nintendo then lets compare and see the truth...... ohh wait bad for business.

here are UK sales during the same period as the wii u and 3ds launch.

WII U_____40K
3DS______143K
SWITCH___80K

So nintendo kindly feck off with your BS figures and claims just to give the console more hype to your investors, you have release a nasty cheap ass over priced machine yet again, the endless issues it has will put buyers off, this will then lead to low sales and devs will abandon shit (like they did with the wii u) and then it will be yet again another system with lacking titles other than the usual nintendo titles and shovelware shit.
