Nintendo Confirms Breath of the Wild as last first party WiiU game

maxresdefault.jpg

Sad but inevitable fate for the WiiU as Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime broke the news.

Speaking to Polygon following the Switch launch event in New York City last Friday, he had the following to say: “From a first-party standpoint, there's no new development coming after the launch of the legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,” he said. “We really are at the end of life for Wii U.”

He added that Wii U titles will continue to be sold at retail and on the Nintendo eShop, and the company had not begun any discussion for ceasing online services for the console: “From our standpoint, sunsetting is quite some time into the future. The ongoing activity from an online standpoint on [Mario] Kart and Splatoon is significant. We're going to continue to support that.”

The WiiU has been around for about four and a half years and failed to meet the expectations that the big N had for it. “Even today when I ask people, ‘so what was Wii U all about?,’ I get a wide variety of responses,” Reggie had to say on the matter. “In managing the business, that's just not good.” The company is however much more confident (hopeful?) about their upcoming console touting the slogan “a home console you can take with you".

Surprising absolutely no one. What was the last first party Wii U title to date?
Paper Mario Color Splash which came out October i think
Unless I missed that they never said that, they said it wouldn't replace the 3DS (which is still getting titles released)
They did say nx won't replace wii u or 3ds

Remember that rumor that said it was going to be canned? Because I do.
Glad to see I was right and not really sad to see the Wii U go. The poor system had a rough life, it's time for the Wii U to get some rest.

Eh, all joking aside, at least they aren't taking the axe to the console's online services yet. Hell, Microsoft still hosts services for the Xbox 360, even integrating it into the new Windows 10/Xbox One environment, and it's old as dirt by comparison. I don't expect Wii U online services to stick around for much longer, though, unlike the 360.

Imo they should support the two consoles, they still hold up great.

Maybe just include a payed subscription service for the Wii U & 3DS tho along with the Switch.

I think it could be a great idea but hacks could be a problem... Edit: Even if they had to stop progress on the console. I still think the main reason to still support it is the payed online, games are still great, and hardware is to. (Most of the time.)

Oh, yeah I kinda know what you mean
It shouldn't hopefully be that bad though, they've been working on it since 2014 I think? Last thing imo that wouldn't be as stable in the release would be the bugs and glitches in the game.

One of the points of the Switch, is not to split their main focus between consoles.

I hope they don't mess with the last consoles to have free online. Just please don't.

I kinda thought that was what they were doing with the Wii U & 3DS when no one really knew at the time what the Switch was called yet.

I was thinking if they did support the online with their plan they are going to do with the Switch, the console would still be supported, and liked (similar to the PS4, PS3, PS Vita, PSP etc...) Becuase I know some people still do enjoy the console functionality with online modes.

And even if people didin't want that, people would figure out ways similar to the Wiimifi Mod to change the wifi functions to play on a online service besides Nintendo (with limited support.)

More like "Rale of the Wild"
More like "The end of the Rail."

Now we're just sharing songs, that's somehow related to the situation.

Its amazing the 3DS is older than Wii U and still has games being made for it with no sign of slowing down.

I hope the same can be said for Switch.
I dunno, i guess the timing was better? I figured that most people don't have time to play games at home on console which is why there is a market for things like 3DS, psvita and those endless smartphone games, cause it easier to manage and have only such time for it. Unlike someone who does have time for consoles. More people working aren't working with the kind of schduel that allows time to game at home, instead on the go. You can only play console on tv, but you can play 3ds anywhere.

I think the idea of the switch was a possible test for the idea of portable gameplay, but since most titles lacked the gamepad screen game play rather than maybe focused more on just trying to make a NDS on TV with the second screen feature. I like the idea of wii u especially for multiplayer, since those kinds of games like sonic sega all star racing can use up to 5 players instead of 4, and if 2 are playing, each player has their own screen. If the theory of using multiple game pads was real, it would be a good multiplayer console with each player having to not worry about sharing screens with that cross section for multiplayer games. :P

Now that switch is a console/mobile hybrid, it can do what the wii u was trying to do but possibably better. So i consider a wii u a beta test for switch market. Probably the wrong idea but it how it seems, problem is now it seem less of a console. I honestly had this to say since october's reveal video that i was concerned about the idea of focus less on console at home on tv game play, since it is usually where the fun has been for years with their console games. Since nintendo expressed interest in mobile market i could have seen this happening right after they ended club nintendo and started miitomo and then pokemon go and super mario run. I'm a bit scared but i hope is not as bad as i think it is with the mobile focus this time around. :(
