Press Release
Detachable Controllers Reinvent Gaming

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- In an introductory video released today, Nintendo provided the first glimpse of its new home gaming system and revealed that it is called Nintendo Switch. In addition to providing single and multiplayer thrills at home, the Nintendo Switch system also enables gamers to play the same title wherever, whenever and with whomever they choose. The mobility of a handheld is now added to the power of a home gaming system to enable unprecedented new video game play styles.

At home, Nintendo Switch rests in the Nintendo Switch Dock that connects the system to the TV and lets you play with family and friends in the comfort of your living room. By simply lifting Nintendo Switch from the dock, the system will instantly transition to portable mode, and the same great gaming experience that was being enjoyed at home now travels with you. The portability of Nintendo Switch is enhanced by its bright high-definition display. It brings the full home gaming system experience with you to the park, on an airplane, in a car, or to a friend’s apartment.

Gaming springs into action by removing detachable Joy-Con controllers from either side of Nintendo Switch. One player can use a Joy-Con controller in each hand; two players can each take one; or multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options. They can easily click back into place or be slipped into a Joy-Con Grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, if preferred, the gamer can select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller to use instead of the Joy-Con controllers. Furthermore, it is possible for numerous people to bring their Nintendo Switch systems together to enjoy local multiplayer face-to-face competition.

“Nintendo Switch allows gamers the freedom to play however they like,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO, Nintendo of America. “It gives game developers new abilities to bring their creative visions to life by opening up the concept of gaming without boundaries.”

Developers can design their games supporting a variety of play styles, which gives gamers the freedom to choose an experience that best suits them. Some of the publishers, developers and middleware partners announcing support for Nintendo Switch are as follows:

They don't want to price themselves out of the younger market. Look at the prices of Sony and Microsoft's latest consoles. Prices keep rising with each iteration they come out with. Who wants to spend $400 to $500 and rising with each new console. I as a parent can't spend that kind of money. Not everyone can afford that. Nintendo keeps them on the lower cost point not the higher.

I agree. If Switch will be to PS4/XB1 what the Wii was to PS3/360 then at minimum the damn games should be 50 NOT 60 dollars. Or they could try giving us two big 60 dollar games and two small 40 dollar games a year, one game per quarter. Another thing, digital games need to price match Steam. I only have Exclusives and games not available on Steam on my Wii U because the PC version tends to be cheaper. Nintendo royally screwed up by not making the eShop competitive.

Yea but eshop is mostly exclusives. Steam isn't. Really can't blame them for wanting a profit on their own stuff.

There are plenty of multiplats on the eShop and sadly their disc copies are way cheaper than the digital copy when it should be the other way around. The eShop is a joke.

This is the only real answer to why nintendo does not want to join ms and sony in the race to arms. I agree with this way of thinking, HOWEVER and this is a BIG however, if the switch is even £50 close to the ps4 or xbone, (even the slim or one) then they have a problem. With the slim ps4 costing now only £250, tell me how cheap nintendo has to go to price themselves lower than the competition, in the eyes of a parent. Which does not look good. I do not believe the switch will be cheaper or equal to £200 when it comes out... more like £250 or £300. Which is why, i am so worried about it right now. Because i think you are thinking the right way, but the price will be similar... Now, if they do manage to make this cheaper by a good amount, then they have winner, as far as price goes. But something tells me they wont...

If they release at the same price range as the ps4 slim or xbone, they are playing their complete success on the thought that the "gaming on the move" concept will make many people buy their console. I, for one, do not care at all for this feature though, as i never game on the move.

Your right, but I'm not so sure their thinking of the gaming on the move as being going outside out their residence so much as that your not tethered to your tv taking it away from other family members wanting to use it. You can't automatically think every family has multiple tv's. But most probably do. But most people put their gaming system inn their main tv. That can sometimes create a problem with other members of the family. I like the idea myself of being able to take my games with me. I use emulators on my tablet and phone all the time. But that's just me.

ALSO, as making a console that it´s also portable, you don't need to make a "port" for the "portable" system as in....A TOTALLY DIFERENT game that has nothing to do whatsoever with the console version. This makes the "Make once, run everywhere" have a new meaning.

Its sounds like this Switch is going to be quite powerful quoting from Nivida sites Gaming used in the most powerful graphics cards, sounds promising!

"The high-efficiency scalable processor includes an NVIDIA GPU based on the same architecture as the world’s top-performing GeForce gaming graphics cards."

alongside its massive 8 core cpu should be pretty good!

Sorry, where are you seeing ANYTHING mentioning an 8 core cpu? And it should be mentioned that the architecture they're referring to only means that the graphics chip will be based on Pascal

Probably I actually thought I read it somewhere about 2xQuad Core I must of been dreaming lol. I was just googling it but could not find anything about the CPU but the GPU sounds promising though.

"Same architecture" doesn't really mean anything with regards to performance though. As an example, the original Macintosh and TI-89 calculator both have the same CPU as the Sega Genesis, but good luck trying to play Sonic on that.

Cause no one made the effort.

Tegra x1 has eight cores but later got rid of 4 a53, tegra x2 has six cores with 2 custom ones, and px have the double of respective chip, haveing two of each.

This is a joke, right? There's quite a few reasons why the original Macintosh and the TI-89 calculator can't run Genesis games even though they all have the same CPU, and it's not because of "lack of effort".

Comedy option: The Apple LaserWriter printer also has a 68000. Is there no Genesis emulator for that because of "lack of effort"?
