Press Release
Detachable Controllers Reinvent Gaming

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- In an introductory video released today, Nintendo provided the first glimpse of its new home gaming system and revealed that it is called Nintendo Switch. In addition to providing single and multiplayer thrills at home, the Nintendo Switch system also enables gamers to play the same title wherever, whenever and with whomever they choose. The mobility of a handheld is now added to the power of a home gaming system to enable unprecedented new video game play styles.

At home, Nintendo Switch rests in the Nintendo Switch Dock that connects the system to the TV and lets you play with family and friends in the comfort of your living room. By simply lifting Nintendo Switch from the dock, the system will instantly transition to portable mode, and the same great gaming experience that was being enjoyed at home now travels with you. The portability of Nintendo Switch is enhanced by its bright high-definition display. It brings the full home gaming system experience with you to the park, on an airplane, in a car, or to a friend’s apartment.

Gaming springs into action by removing detachable Joy-Con controllers from either side of Nintendo Switch. One player can use a Joy-Con controller in each hand; two players can each take one; or multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options. They can easily click back into place or be slipped into a Joy-Con Grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, if preferred, the gamer can select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller to use instead of the Joy-Con controllers. Furthermore, it is possible for numerous people to bring their Nintendo Switch systems together to enjoy local multiplayer face-to-face competition.

“Nintendo Switch allows gamers the freedom to play however they like,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO, Nintendo of America. “It gives game developers new abilities to bring their creative visions to life by opening up the concept of gaming without boundaries.”

Developers can design their games supporting a variety of play styles, which gives gamers the freedom to choose an experience that best suits them. Some of the publishers, developers and middleware partners announcing support for Nintendo Switch are as follows:

I believe the original argument was just about how they want Nintendo to make more money and be successful, yet they are limiting themselves when looking at the WHOLE gaming market. What you say is understandable and I agree, you got the great games, you don't need high extended 4k graphics. Unfortunately, that's not what the general public thinks, so they're skipping out on becoming more successful and getting more great games.

Their not selling out. Their sticking to what they do best, making enjoyable games and systems that everyone can afford and all generations can can get enjoyment out of. That's the whole point of gaming to begin with. To have FUN. They understand that. Having the highest graphics and fastest console does not equate to more FUN. The games and playability do. I'm not a Nintendo fanboy by no means. I own a Xbox 360 and play it quite often. But I only play a handful of games on it because that's really all that is on there I find fun.

Tegra 4 isn't the newest. Here are the Tegra versions so far. I'll fill in additional devices in a few minutes but the devices I have in my list should give you an idea of where things are headed.

Tegra 2 (Motorola Xoom tablet)
Tegra 3 (OUYA)
Tegra 4 (Madatz Mojo)
Tegra K1 (Shield 8" Tablet)
Tegra X1 (Shield TV)

Thanks for clarifying! Then I got a feel that it is K1 or X1 ? Who knows.

Nvidia did backtrack on the FCC in regards to releasing their next Shield tablet. They stated business reasons. Something tells me they the were probably going to release a tab running on Tegra X2 but decided to stick with Nintendo's plan.

This is definitely what I wanted NX to be, very happy with the results, now they just need to leak those specs:unsure:

Im sure Switch will be using an X2 variant maxing out around 1.5 TFlops when docked.

EDit: turns out the 1.5Tflops measurement was in FP16 not 32

that's best case scenario, for me as well. And I'm always hoping nintendo has the best case scenario :P I'm tired of people bashing nintendo for not appealing to "hardcore gamers", whatever that means.

We shall wait and see about Tegra version for Nintendo Switch. I am fan of Nvidia for PC/MAC myself, thought.

Sucks that we won't be getting dual screen gaming. I wonder if Nintendo could make a wireless receiver card that slides into the dock. It would really suck if Wii U gamers still have to hold onto their Wii U system to play their library.

Nintendo confirmed that Switch is a single screen experience.

it's just like a wii U, but you can take the gamepad with you (as long as the crappy battery lasts)...how come everyone is saying this is amazing and the wii U sucks? D:

I still fail to see why providing a more powerful platform would be equal to selling out. Selling out would be to abandon their vision and creativity by creating a clone of sony's or microsoft's games. You said it yourself, it is the games that count. As long as they provide the experience they want, i cannot see where they sell out by providing a more powerful platform. The only thing they have to gain (and nothing to lose) if they did so, is possibly gain more followers and devs flocking to it. I completely understand where you are coming from and i am a happy multi-platform user myself, but nintendo's arrogance of doing thing in their own way, ignoring the signs of the time, has so far only hurt their reputation for people that are not fans. They should expand their target market, not minimise it and that is exactly what they did with the Wii, they expanded the user base dramatically, just because they opened the experience up to more people. Why not open the experience to more people now too? The ones they always ignore? We are talking about a HUGE market here, all while nintendo can keep having their own experiences out-classing everything else on the console. It is easy to shine when you stick to your guns and make your own niche market, everybody knows that. Times have changed. People now own way too many platforms where they can find casual and tablet games, the hardcore/call of duty/gears of war/doom/tomb raider crowd is simply, TOO big to ignore. I hate to say this (but in the end it might be better - who knows) but if nintendo flops with the switch in a similar fashion to the WiiU, i can only see them going software only like Sega. I don't want them to flop and i wish the Switch makes them back into #1, but until we have clear answers on power, battery life and a few more details, it is hard to be optimistic. The last thing i need from nintendo is a handful of nintendo's franchises next to games i can find in google play, just in a new control scheme, and if power-wise this is close to the shield or other tablets... they are helpless.

Having said all that, i am happy to agree to the fact that we disagree. Somehow, i think this is their last shot at "getting it right" and being successful. Let's hope they do.

Nintendo is selling out. 12 years of touch and dual screens and motion and doing their own thing and bringing in casuals and new gamers for this shit... Swapping between a smaller screen that might have no touch and a TV does not equal that Nintendo level of innovation.

What is Nintendo level of innovation, if I may ask? No other console currently on the market does this, so it is innovative..

No other console maybe but there are plenty of Android tablets with HDMI-out. From everything we know, and from the lack of info in regards to Switch's screen, Switch might offer less than the aforementioned tablets. Basically, Switch offers the same shit we have had since Atari. One screen, controllers and a seat. Sorry but that shit is boring! Do I have a gaming PC for traditional TV play? Yes, but I don't want vanilla all the damn time. Wii was yummy chocolate and Wii U was a mix of chocolate and vanilla by not going all in with motion and touch but trying to make a balance. Switch is fucking Vanilla lite. It won't be as powerful (which personally isn't an issue for me) but its also going to try to offer the same, tired, old gameplay setup as all the other traditional platforms. In no way is Switch innovative unless they somehow managed to keep in motion.

They don't want to price themselves out of the younger market. Look at the prices of Sony and Microsoft's latest consoles. Prices keep rising with each iteration they come out with. Who wants to spend $400 to $500 and rising with each new console. I as a parent can't spend that kind of money. Not everyone can afford that. Nintendo keeps them on the lower cost point not the higher.
