Does editing this prevent the system from doing system updates if it is an a9lh/luma console?
It actually has in the past. It was a well known issue that those trying to update from 11.0 to 11.1, including myself, could not get the system update to work if they had a modified home menu.

I modified my home menu very shortly after this thread was posted, during the 10.X ages. I have not had a single problem updating since then. What kind of modifications have you been installing?

I've got a unit stuck on 11.0 with a modified home menu. What's the easiest way to undo this?
If you have a NAND backup prior to the modification, restore it and update, then reinstall the modification if you wish. If not, maybe you should try to install the home menu CIA (can't link to it here) again.

It's just an a9lh/luma console, but it has a modified home menu and can't update past 11.0. Also, Luma Updater throws a fatal error when trying to update Luma

You can try updating it by force using sysUpdater + 11.2 update CIAs downloaded either off of NUS or off of that ISO site. I did this back when I first set up rxTools on my 3DS (around the time 10.3 was released, I think) due to getting a blackscreen upon boot after updating my emuNAND through the system settings.

Custom Sleep_LZ.bin
Do you just reinstall the modified home menu you created back then instead recreating the modified homemenu cia each time an update happens?

As long as the HOME Menu doesn't get altered with an update (like what the theme update did), then I guess that'd be what you would do.

The person I was replying to said they never had problems updating with a modified home menu and that they did this back in 10.x days. So I was wondering if they are still using the cia they created back in 10.x, which would indicate the older home menu menu version may be the reason it did not have issues for some reason.

I modified a hell of a lot of things; I practically couldn't go anywhere on my 3ds without seeing a custom message/modification. But never did I have to uninstall or reinstall the modified home menu CIA, nor did I ever have trouble updating. That is why I was baffled when I read your post, saying you had difficulties updating.

It's somebody else's 3DS. They have lost any NAND backups from before the HomeMenu modification, and have lost the original HomeMenu .cia to restore as well. It's stuck on 11.0.0-33U and won't update. Luma gives a fatal error trying to update Luma files using LumaUpdater and Nintendo update just fails.

You can't possibly have kept your modifications through updates. Since 10.x there were a few times where homemenu was updated, and afaik that would remove the custom home menu thus removing those modifications.

I swear to you, up until this previous update, I kept the modifications. Maybe I refrained from updating for a while, and when I decided to, I updated to a version that didn't update the home menu. Otherwise, I don't know what to tell you.

As suggested by Tomato Hentai (make a NAND backup first!), try installing the HBL (https://github.com/yellows8/hblauncher_loader/releases), then download and "install" sysUpdater (https://github.com/profi200/sysUpdater/releases). From here, obtain the 11.2 update CIAs using 3DNUS (if you need to know how, ask), place them into the "updates" folder on the root of the SD card, run sysUpdater, and choose "update".

I've got 3DNUS but can't find the 11.2 update files
Fill out the "Title ID" box with, "11.2.0-35", and fill out the "Version" box with your region (U, E, etc.; but I cannot stress to you the importance of entering the correct region). Refer to this video for extra information/help (unless you really feel the need to ask one of us, which is fine, too):
