Yifan Lu Announces HENKaku - A New Native Vita Homebrew Enabler for 3.60.

Earlier today, Yifan Lu, a well-known member of the Vita hacking scene famous for the Rejuvenate hack for the Dev Assistants, has announced that a new (native!) Vita homebrew enabler for the latest firmware version, as of writing (3.60), will be arriving tomorrow at "9:00AM UTC".

The new hack, known as "HENKaku", will require the following:
  • A Vita/PSTV running 3.60
  • A memcard with at least 10MB of free space (internal memory is currently not supported!)
  • An FTP client
  • An internet connection**
**Offline support is now available! Launch the exploit straight from the email app without the need for internet access at all! See the unofficial release thread for more details. (Internet connection still required for installation)

This is a small paragraph of Yifan Lu himself explaining what the properties of this new homebrew enabler does:

HENkaku simply lets you install homebrew as bubbles in LiveArea. It is a native hack that disables the filesystem sandbox. It installs molecularShell, a fork of VitaShell that lets you access the memory card over FTP and install homebrew packages (which we create as VPK files). With vita-toolchain, developers have access to the same system features licensed developers have access to as well as undocumented features that licensed developers cannot use (including overclocking the processors).

The hack has been released at http://henkaku.me ~ Furthermore, the hack is said to be exclusive to 3.60, and there is to be no backports for the time being.

Nice! What I always wished for!
I m quite happy that i left my vita in the shelf.... almost sold it last week!

Time to install the toolkit and get ready after that rejuvenate mess...
it was not fun at all to program for rejuvenate because of its instability
each day...

this one looks easy. just hit install .. maybe there will be a downloadable zip file for local hosting

I would give quite a lot for cfw on a vita. but I think that ship has almost sailed for me. The only thing that would really interest me is something silly like a Saturn or ps2 emulator but thats not going to happen.

All I want out of any kind of Vita CFW would be for someone to get rid of the crappy bubble home screens. XMB is far better than this bubble crap...

Never going to happen, but a man can dream...

Custom homescreen and USB mass storage for PSTV are honestly the two things I would like to see most out of CFW.

If you dont mind me asking, how do you propose we get mass USB storage from CFW :P

Well I'm no developer, nor do I know anything about the Vita's firmware... But the PSTV has the hardware for it, and if you have a kernel exploit it might be technically feasible to mount ux0: on a USB drive instead.

I hope that will push the native vita homebrow development (a better N64 emulator thanks to more cpu power as the PSP had, a proper PS1 emulator for games not on PSN and maybe sometimes a PSP-iso loader).
It feels at very least a bit odd to install it from some webpage instand of downloading the webpage from a more trutworthy source a wololo (I know there is a offical blog post http://yifan.lu/2016/07/28/henkaku-vita-homebrew-for-everyone/), but it will feel odd anyway to press this button tomorrow to be honest...

Guys, what are your opinions regarding HENkaku working on firmwares lower than 3.60? Yifan Lu says it won't support it, but that it should work. I know, hard to say before the release...

You can make PS1 eboots from an ISO file. You don't need the game to exist on PSN.

Difficult decision. I don't intend to update from 3.18 because I use TN-X PS1 loader all the time, as well as TN-V.

However, if homebrew using this method is incompatible with Rejuvenate and the scene actually takes off this time, it might be a good excuse to buy a second machine.

Ok, but what is on the PSN store are sometimes a games I have played back in the days but never buyed (rented indeed and borrowed from friends ... sure rented and borrowed only ) feels wrong today to do that :)

But is it posibble with this hack to start these mysterious eboots? (yeah Breath of Fire III in german! They added only the PSP version which was english only...)

I wonder if this statement implies the possibility of piracy down the road
It already enables "piracy" insofar as has already been enabled through the various tricks with the email client, since it enables reading and writing of the files needed for that.

That's not piracy as much as it is account swapping. Account swapping has been around as long as consoles had digital content downloads.

Well, that lasted long. Vita updated to 3.60 in preparation for Henkaku.

I suppose I do own a CFW PSP anyway, and it's easier to buy bigger memory cards for that.

I believe this will get the PS Vita scene started :) But it doesn't support internal memory (Vita Slim) atm  Memory cards are way too expensive and not worth getting just to use a majority of content on PS Vita but maybe I'll consider getting a memory card if this leads somewhere interesting...

I really do hope so. The Vita really does have a lot of potential as a homebrew device - just check out the specs! It was a shame that Rejuvenate was as dead as a doornail.

That's why I put it in quotes. :P I know it's not actually piracy, but it's the closest anyone, even the piracy device manufacturers, have got, plus with this enabling read/write on the latest firmware, mass sharing of act.dat files is more likely.

I'm not so interested in piracy in of itself, but any steps that take the Vita towards a potential CFW like the 3DS would really help the scene.

Sharing act.dat files doesn't work. An act.dat is limited to the console it was generated on.

What this does make possible however is unlimited sharing of PSN accounts for as long as the latest firmware remains unpatched.

My Vita's already on 3.60, so I may as well install this.

Yeah, sucks that not much can be done with it, but as others have stated, hopefully people can get a CFW working on it along with "backups".
I rarely use my vita anyways, so the odds of me updating it are pretty slim.
