That's... a very good sign. I think you should actually be able to copy files to extdata 14d1 just from having run that, then.

Yeah, those aren't the actual extdata though... I mean actually copying the badgemngfiles with extdata_dump should work now. Although it may not give results on the home screen unless you have the NNID that this thread is about edited into the right place.

@MrCheeze Thank you! With this and @Februarysn0w 's badge files, and the NNID retriever from @Steveice10 , people should be ready to go with badges. Just replace the 4-byte value at 0x1C in badgemngfile.dat with your own NNID. There is a bit of delay on my end for the next update to custom badge tool, but the latest version should suffice for now

Would be possible to make a quick tutorial?
I have an o3ds 10.0 with menuhax if you need more testers

But how would you put the badge on the system?

I used the NNIDRetriever to get my ID, I replaced it in BadgeMngFile.dat, created the extdata, placed the needed badge files inside of it, and restarted my system. A new button to add badges shows up, I get lots of notifications, and the Badge Arcade is added to my homescreen, but I have no badges.

Those are my results, for the curious.

Put your NNID into an existing BadgeMngFile.dat Like februarysnow's, and also download their BadgeData.dat. inject both of those, and it should work. I'll test this on my 2DS without the arcade

Edit: I can confirm it works. I'll update the OP with a tutorial

How do I inject the files into the extdata? I tried replacing the default settings in extdatadump to inject BadgeData and BadgeMngFile into "00001346:/", but it just says "could not open archive".

I did that, tried to do so following the rules that I saw in the default config.

I believe it goes to 000014d1, as noted in 3dbrew that's where the badge data is stored
I'll try that, I guess.

EDIT:
Copying to 000014d1 worked as it was supposed to, though I got the same error as Jwiz stated with file sized being too big.
At least I got the BadgeMngFile in there, though I don't know what'll happen if it doesn't get the badge file.
