2015 Is Nintendo's Lowest Reviewed Year on Metacritic in 10 Years

nintendologo.jpg

2015 Has been a year of solid releases all around for most publishers, but it would appear the same can't be said for our good friends at Nintendo.

NeoGAF member TI82 compiled Metacritic data from the last 10 years of Nintendo games, and 2015 is the worst one, with an average rating of 69.8. That includes all Nintendo games, both Wii U and 3DS games.

While the Wii U has had some great releases this year, such as Splatoon, Super Mario Maker, and Yoshi’s Woolly World, it also had some pretty bad ones. Like Mario Tennis Ultra Smash, which has a 60 rating on Metacritic.

As the chart below shows, the best years for Nintendo were 2009 and 2010, with Metacritic averages of 82 and 86, respectively.

For 2015, Nintendo’s average is just 69.8. By comparison, Sony’s average is 76.6, and Microsoft’s is 80. However, Nintendo has released more games this year than both Sony and Microsoft combined.

The chart breaks down as follows:
metacritic-data.png

Keep in mind that release of titles such as Xenoblade X do not contribute to these averages due to yearly cutoff around this time in November.

The fact that Star Fox and Zelda were delayed may also contribute to the much lower score, coupled with the recent releases of highly anticipated titles met with mediocre reception, such as Yo-kai Watch and Tri-Force Heroes.

What is your opinion of Nintendo's 2015 year of games? Do you agree it is as lackluster as it appears to be?

and i wonder why nintendo?! nothing but mario, shitty amiibo games that no one wants to play and no 3rd party gaemes of course they are going to fail!

the wiiu was the worst console and had the poorest library of all their gens they have ever created i was lucky to play 2 dozen games on it the whole time i have had it! They better step up their game with the NX or they can join SEGA and make their shitty sonic mario games for other consoles.

Nintendo's main problem is with how there are almost no 3rd party games being made for their systems any more. Sure, they may trip over a new hit franchise every now and then, but the problem is that the games that generally make up the core of their library are often just the same franchises given a new coat of paint. The other problem is that consoles within the current generation have all been fairly lackluster. We're already looking at year 3 of the XBoxOne and there's only been about 2 dozen games released that aren't just yearly sports roster updates or "re-mastered" versions of previous titles. PS4 isn't looking much better, but atleast has a handful of decent RPGs and action games. But then we have the Wii U, which is entering year 5 and actually has fewer games released in that time than XBone has now. While handheld sales are part of where Nintendo has managed to stay relevant, they also seem intent on moving away from this market in an attempt to cash in on mobile games, which, for any gamer, should make you very concerned about Nintendo's future as a company.

I don't have a Wii U, just a 3DS. I bought a N3DSXL this year, but I've only bought two games all year: MM and Fantasy Life. One of those actually came out last year, and the other is a port. I was excited for the new AC until I read the reviews, and decided to pass.

The last six or eight months I've been only playing old DS games.

omfg guys not only is 69.8 not a bad score but it's metacritic
It is also an aggregate of all reviewers scores over the course of 2015. If the average score of these titles is that low, especially compared to the competition, it is worth paying attention to. Not to mention the main draw of the data is the fact that it hasn't been this low in 10 years, meaning Nintendo failed to meet anything substantial this year to bump up a significant amount of opinions in the review world.

Suffice it to say, no matter how you spin it, it really isn't a good thing.

The average score only tells you so much. If you remove just the two 40~ titles the average boosts up a whole 3 points.
You have to go quite a bit deeper and actually look at what was released to get the whole story. I wish people who played armchair analyst did so better...

Granted, they've had a pretty weak year overall in terms of heavy hitters and even the more smaller titles.
The real takeaway, if anything, is how low their output has been. Even their greatest years had things like Pokemon Platinum (83), Soul Silver and Heart Gold (counted twice, both at 87) Metroid Prime Trilogy (93) and Flipnote (91) to help boost/stabilize the average. Even a sales bomb like Sin & Punishment 2 got an 87, but for this week we'll pretend that it's not sales numbers and profits that ultimately matter but review scores. If by chance their average goes up and XCX gets good reviews then we can flip.

Could it also partially be that some good games simply don't get metacritic reviews? The new mystery dungeon is sitting at around a 96 user score but has no official reviews, might be other games like that as well....

Between crappy F2P games, a still garbage online system, and mediocre releases, I'm not surprised.

I mean, there's no arguing 2015 wasn't a slow year for Nintendo but this years lineup wasn't exactly any worse than Sony's lineup.

PS4 games I enjoyed in 2015:
- Witcher 3 (Non exclusive)
- Fallout 4 (Non exclusive)
- MGS: V (Non exclusive)
- Bloodborne
- Until Dawn
- God of War III (Remake)
- DMC: Definitive Edition (Remake, Non exclusive)

I own a Vita and love the console but I can't name a single game released this year that I purchased or played which wasn't a multi-plat indie.

Wii U games I enjoyed in 2015:
- Mario Maker
- Splatoon
- Yoshi's Wooly World
- Porject Zero: Maiden of the Black Water

3DS games I enjoyed in 2015:
- Majora's Mask 3D (Remake)
- Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate

It was pretty even for me this year and if you remove all the remakes and non exclusive titles Nintendo comes out on top (Bloodborne is amazing tho).
Interestingly enough I felt this year was the first time the Wii U's lineup beat out the 3DS'

It is Obviously clear that metacritic officially sucks now..
People will be better off not looking there for an honest opinion, and i am not only talking about Nintendont here.
In general i personally visit multiple game forums and review sites to get a feel about a game.
But i a think if you really want an honest opinion from one site then you would be better off going to Opencritic instead of metacritic.

I'm still waiting for a non-shitty Zelda game...then they can take my wallet. Hey wait, what if they were secretly making TWO Zelda games this entire time? I mean, look at that second image! It could be either TPHD (High-definition Toilet Paper?) or a secret to everybody.

Bayonetta 2 surprised me in so many positive ways.
Solid 10 for me, unexpected mind...

Then again, I DO NOT REVIEW ON METACRITIC AS MANY OF US DO NOT DO.
Are the amount of reviews taken into account?

Straight to the point. I like that.

I don't even know where to start when thinking about the next games I will play. There is just so much stuff regarding the combined power of 3DS and WiiU.
