Is the New 3DS the final iteration of the 3DS or more to come?

  1. Original 3DS
  2. Original 3DS XL
  3. Doorstopper 2DS
  4. New 3DS Standard
  5. New 3DS XL
It seems like Nintendo tried to make as many improvements for the 3DS crowd as possible so another model might not be released, but who knows, it's Nintendo.

The New 3DS has exactly what the Original 3DS should have had:

+ 2nd analogue stick (well, it's a 2nd Circle Pad)
+ Much better 3D perception
+ Bigger games run smoothly (Smash, Xenoblade - New 3DS exclusive)
+ Cover Plates (but this is exclusive for the New 3DS Standard)

The 3DS is gonna be done within the next 1.5 years, guaranteed. It's reaching the end of its natural life, and revision after revision hasn't been enough to keep sales momentum. It's about time for Nintendo to move on.

I'd like to see a definitive version of the New 3DS that irons out its flaws (the analogue nub replaced by a proper circle pad, for example) but given how old the 3DS line as a whole is getting at this point I suspect they'll just save those upgrades for the inevitable successor. The system can't handle the things they have in mind for it any more (hence the New 3DS being needed for Xenoblade) so we'll likely see a new system announced sometime next year I think, maybe the year after tops.

Quite possibly we'll only get to see five 3DS's. I personally think five iterations is a little excessive for the 3DS, although the Game Boy era had its share of revisions as well. I think the New 3DS XL will stand as the definitive 3DS system on the market because I can't see Nintendo releasing a sixth when we're currently reaching the tail end of the 3DS timeline in the next few years or so.

my guess is we will get a very last stripped down version just like the wii mini, game boy micro, and psp street
maybe a New 2DS,
yeah i know the new 3ds always spying head tracking is the most reason to get a new 3ds, but since there are some exclusives, the second analogic stick and better hardware (useless for games without thoose capabilities but good for marketing)
so there is a reason to make a last throw away version console.. just right before the new console comes out

Obviously. I've said it a dozen times. The New 3DS is this generation's slight hardware buff before the inevitable successor is announced.

The DS had the DSi- 3DS was announced a year later.
The GBA had the SP- DS was announced a year later.
The Game Boy had the GB Pocket- sure enough, GBC was soon to follow.
The GBC didn't have a hardware revision, but then again it only had a three year lifetime, and it's often regarded as another revision of the original GB.

Anyway, I think I've made my point.

This seems like a good plan; Buy a New 3DS XL plus flashcart and Cubic Ninja (or whatever) and pay below the retail price it's going for now. By then the demand's dropped down due to the next Nintendo handheld.

Didn't think about this but you're right Nintendo did release the Wii Mini who barely anyone bought, so I wouldn't be surprised if they made a Mini 3DS. lol

Counting the XL as an iteration is like calling a different size of shoes a different iteration.
The XL is the same device, just for old people with incredibly bad eyesight that don't need to use their portable device as a portable device.
Right now the New 3DS is basically going down the same road as the DSi. So I imagine the next step will be a new DS. They'll also likely call it a New 3DS U, so fans wont get confused and think it's the same thing. Because nintendo naming logic.

Also the "new" 3DS didn't do much. It's a bit better at playing games (and 99% are already optimized to run fine on an original 3DS to begin with), the teeny tiny analogue nub is a joke, and 3D is still useless old 3D.
The cover plates are kinda cool though, I didn't know that was a thing.
But point is, they'll soon need to come up with something new. Better layout, more power, hopefully not a new gimmick.

Damn this post is horribly written. I shouldn't type after frying in the sun all day.

Malice, back then Nintendo didn't make XL versions of their handhelds before DS came along so in this case they can be seen as another iteration/version.

"GBA XL" would probably be too big if Nintendo had thought of making it.

Either way, we're not going to see a Wii Mini scenario. The crap Wii model was only released because the Wii was stupid big and Nintendo wanted to leech every last bit of profit. Even then, they only released it in a couple of regions (notably only the US, Canada, and Europe) where they probably saw lower sales momentum than anywhere else and thought there were still profits to bleed out of people. It was a cheap, last ditch effort to get more sales that barely dug into their overall profits from the Wii up to that point.

no, that just means that they are more aware that some people find the normal models to small, that's like saying each colour is a new version. The XLs are the exact same as the non-XL only bigger and more expensive, except in the case of the N3dsXL as it is actually missing a feature (faceplates).

I doubt they'll make any more versions of the 3DS. The New 3DS just came out and the 3DS doesn't have very long left before the next console. They're probably gonna focus on making some n3DS exclusives to sell the console before the next one is announced.
The only thing they might do is make a New 2DS as that's the only one that hasn't gotten an upgrade, but I doubt it, since it focuses on being cheaper at the cost of losing some features, so making a version with upgraded specs doesn't really make a whole lot of sense.

Bit of a catch 22 when it comes to the New 3DS. Should Nintendo make more games that use the New 3DS's power and second control stick while pissing off the millions of original 3DS owners. Or put more effort in making games that run on both types of 3DS and not focus on making games exclusively for the N3DS.

Reminds me of the Gameboy/Gameboy Color era where grey carts have some colour when played on thr GBC, black carts can be played on all Gameboy systems while giving it full colour on the GBC and then the see through GBC carts which can't be played on the original system.

Unless Nintendo can pull out some surprise Direct where they announce a flood of N3DS exclusive games, then it'll be the equivalent of the DSi console.

Meaning it exists and is big and does more things sometimes.

Why did we buy them again?
I actually ignored the DSi because dropping GBA support in favor of a DSi shop and camera was not enough for me to upgrade.

That said, I found a cheap DSi XL console and I actually use it a lot when I don't want to take my 3DS XL out of the house.
