It's worth a try, and seeing how cheap tablets really can be, why not?
Looking forward to the games though, will they even use Mario? Mario brings up so many game memories, I don't know if many parents/teachers would give lessons with Mariogames.

1. Nobody wants dedicated hardware buttons stuck to their tablet.
2. Detachable hardware buttons still haven't been done right. (see Razer Edge http://ca.ign.com/articles/2013/03/28/razer-edge-gaming-tablet-review)
3. A laptop does not offer the same type of portability as a mobile device like a smartphone or tablet, nor the battery life (typically).

1- I do. I sincerely do not see what the problem is with sticking an analog stick (think PSP GO analog stick, so it doesn't stick out) and a few buttons on the sides (again not sticking out), somewhat in the layout of this post's mockup image. Also some triggers that could be used as a stand. What I DON'T want, is to play Call of Duty sliding my thumbs around a screen and with an accuracy of 2%.

2- Again, if I have to carry around, detachable stuff, I would go with your first option and buy a normal tablet while carrying an Xbox 360 controller.

3- As far as portability is concerned, you have a point. However, boot up any demanding game and watch your battery life go on vacation.

But then again...I speak for myself.

"Nintendo" was banned when I was in elementary school.
If you got caught playing a Gameboy Colour then you're forced to give it to the teacher who would then later give it back when the school was out.
This happened to me. When the teacher was gonna keep it for the rest of the school year. I stole it back. Got a big detention for it. Worth it.
