Rumor Earthbound anniversary coming up.

Oh WOW! I just was reading that Nintendo is planning something for Eatrthbound 30th anniversary coming up in August. Have you already heard?

Be it a remaster, remake, rehash, or otherwise, I'm excited to see it come to life. I'm curious to see how this will effect the fan-made versions of the franchise. Really hope its not just the snes version coming to Nintendo Online. Also more curious if Mother 3 will finally, and officially, come to the US. ALSO, also, deeply curious about a measuring stick.

I mean it says Mother 2 which is Earthbound not Mother 3. Mother 3 was already confirmed for Japan only.

Haha. That would be funny if Nintendo used the fan translation. Kind of something a big company would do.

nintendo should at least try to do this but nope. there going after emulator's and shit and not doing anything for revaling a new system and shit like that. i would like to play mother games some time....

I guess they're not on the Switch yet, but there have been abundant other opportunities to obtain them legally.

Mother 1 = EarthBound Beginnings
Mother 2 = Earthbound
Mother 3 = Earthbound 2

I would surprised if Nintendo is going to release Earthbound remake like they did with Super Mario RPG.

That's actually an interesting idea. Do it in the style of the Link's Awakening remake, which is similar to the claymation designs of Mother/Earthbound promo art. Super Mario RPG and Mother/Earthbound Zero are about the same length, so we're talking similar development costs.

If there's a way to recycle and tweak either the Super Mario RPG or Link's Awakening engine into an Earthbound JRPG, that'd lower costs. It would get some serious coverage from the Earthbound community and possibly pave the way for remakes of the other two.

Really? I really need to go back and take another swing at EBZ some day.

I only got as far as Magicant before I started panicking about having missed something. (I was playing the GBA version, but apparently some of the hacks of the NES version are superior, especially because of the music.)

I should mention I wasn't going by memory. I did a quick look online, and both games are reportedly around 17 hours.

They feel different because Earthbound Zero has that area near the end that requires grinding with the robot. In general, Super Mario RPG is a much more linear and straightforward JRPG experience. Earthbound Zero is much more traditional JRPG, like Dragon Quest.

On an unrelated note, it's strange to think that the legitimacy of Earthbound Zero wasn't confirmed until the Japan-only re-release (Mother 1+2) on GBA many years later.

I played all of EarthBound series, also I used English translation patch for Mother 3 on GBA.

Mother 3 started to develop for SNES and later, moved to N64 but cancelled in 2000 until they revived the project for GBA version in 2003.

I do think Mother 3 wasn't localized for NA version because GBA would be dead when EarthBound 2 comes out in 2007 or 2008, but developers could move the development and localization to DS if they want, so it has to be re-written.

Mother/EarthBound developers aren't fast to make games and it took 3 years for Mother 3 to finish the development.

MOTHER 3 = EarthBound Endings.
Anyway maybe they could digitally re-release such compilation.

It seems like Mother 4 isn't coming and Mother 3 was released in 2006, 12 years after Mother 2 released. It would be 18 years now.

I wish to see Nintendo to invest in Mother/EarthBound brand like they did with other two RPG titles - Xenoblade Chronicles and Paper Mario. If Mother 3 becomes realistic, it could be city exploration in 3D like they did with Mother 3 for N64 prior to cancellation.

I think Nintendo will sit on the franchise. Shigesato Itoi has stated that he won't be working on a Mother 4. Like Kid Icarus, the franchise does well when paired with Smash Bros. I think the games will be remade or characters will make cameos, but I don't see Nintendo paying it much attention in the long run. Like you said, it's been 18 years already.

I could be wrong, of course.

That first Mother 4 trailer must be its own thing. Both games look nice. Hopefully, the teams can finish them.
