Hi, so i recently fixed my 3ds and wanted to upgrade my storage. Currently i have an old 3ds model and a 16 gb micro sd. I have been wanting to upgrade it, but wondered "will more storage make my 3ds slower?". Ive read that the 3ds is defaulted to 32 gb(although i know that i can reformat bigger sd cards), so im scared to upgrade to a bigger sd card. My 3ds is pretty old too and i dont want to sacrifice gameplay over more games

I use a 128GB Samsung card with my 3DS XL and works perfectly fine. Generally, I just play Mario Kart 7 online and the game loads up fast.

Speaking of MK7, I once encountered a session with hackers who were really annoying, but the rest are normal players just wanting to have fun and have a challenge. I usually end up in 1st or 2nd class so not much of a challenge. :P

Not really, you can use 64GB and above card as long you format them correctly, get a card that fit your need, decide how much space you really need, 3ds game average around few hundred MB to 1-2 GB maybe.
Not that much really, i wanted to make sure that my purchase is worth it, just in case if i wanted to download 40 more games for some unknown reason

I thought so too, turns out the game servers aren't planned so far to be taken offline so that's great!

eShop is, though. Next year.
I'll probably buy a 128 gb one if its not far off from a 64 gb one
128GB are pretty cheap these days so it's better to go with that than 64GB, unless they cost more in Poland.

With a 128GB card you can fill it up and still have free space available, that's what happened to me. So many games and I usually just pick one.

128 GB is an excessive amount of space. If you get 64 GB and actually manage to fill it up, why not consider deleting something you don't play anymore? Besides, at least if something goes wrong with a 64 GB card (and things do tend to go wrong with cards with alarming frequency), you will only lose at most 64 GB of data.

128 GB also specifically needs to be formatted with 64k clusters. The things most likely to be affected are GBA games and themes, and possibly home menu loading times. There are many threads on the subject, such as https://gbatemp.net/threads/weird-problem-w-gba-injects-vc-on-3ds.542554/#post-8701031 .

I've been using 128gb card since 2017, so far no issues. It does takes a few seconds more to boot up the system but from aside from that it's been smooth sailing for me.
Is that an original 3DS hardware? Mine's the same way.

I assume a New 3DS boots up a lot faster. Not something that bothers me as I got used to it.

My New 3DS takes approximately 25 seconds to boot. Don't know if there is a way to make the boot process go slightly faster.
@Marc_LFD Must be either LumaCFW, the way that my card was formatted, or the speed of the SD card itself. I'm 100% unsure on that one.

N3DSXL Galaxy and 128GB Sandisk Ultra. I just tested with a stopwatch and it takes around 15 seconds to boot, i formatted the card with guiformat. I don't use custom themes but GBA games runs fine here.

I know a friend who went crazy with a 400GB card and it takes almost a whole minute to boot his 2DS (original model) and he also experienced the GBA issue first hand (some pixels being displayed on the lower screen).
