PlayStation 5 gets variable refresh rate support this week

dsadsadsadasdaw.png

If you've been disappointed by the lack of variable refresh rate support on the PlayStation 5, then it's time to rejoice, as Sony is rolling out VRR on the PS5 later this week. Designed to improve performance, frame pacing, and prevent screen tearing, variable refresh rate support allows the PlayStation 5 to match the refresh rate of your TV or monitor, providing you use an HDMI 2.1 cable, and screen that supports such a connection. A handful of PS5 games will also be getting patches to make use of the new feature, including Spider Man-Remastered and Miles Morales, Resident Evil Village, Deathloop, Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition, and more, with further titles to get updates in the future.
  • Astro’s Playroom
  • Call of Duty: Vanguard
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
  • Deathloop
  • Destiny 2
  • Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition
  • DIRT 5
  • Godfall
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  • Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
  • Resident Evil Village
  • Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
  • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
  • Tribes of Midgard

you're one of my best friends as well.

even though most of these games are on both the ps4 and the ps5, I prefer the ps5's for the fast loading mostly, but most of these extras like uhd or high refresh rates I can't enjoy considering my tv is incapable of them. I don't plan to get a new tv until this one dies. it's not even a smart tv, so that's a bummer.
lol, I just gave up and went for a PS4 Pro, and gave it a new SSD instead. xD
It's good enough, lol

the only ps5 only game I own is ratchet and clank. I'm pretty sure all the rest are also on the ps4. I do have the intergrade thing for final fantasy vii remake, which is supposed to be ps5 exclusive, but that's pretty much it. I'd say it's not worth getting one if you own a pro or even a ps4 in general considering. however, if you don't own one or you want to go legit (what I'm doing as I have a ps4 on 5.05), then I'd get a ps5 just to play a lot of those ps4 titles you missed.

Sony is lucky that their only real competitor is Nintendo, that somewhat manages to be even more archaic tech wise on a tech business.
Those of you who just count console sales miss the bigger picture. You obviously don't appreciate how much MSFT makes off of Game Pass, including for PC. Sony is an afterthought compared to MSFT. And it is falling further behind, not gaining ground.

This is a feature that shouldn't be needed. Make games keep a consistent feamerate and that becomes a non-issue.

I can't for the life of me comprehend why aren't these consoles scaled better.

Variable framerate is a gimmicky cash grab that is being touted as a great thing.

Oh well, guess one more feature can't hurt, but they could work towards improving system performance.

That's wishful thinking. Game Pass is what, $12 a month? Which means if PS4/PS5 owners buy just one new game each month, Sony is pulling in way more revenue from their users. I won't deny Game Pass is a great value, though.

gamepass is $9.99 by itself, with gold, it's $14.99. gold is also $9.99, but you get a deal if you get both. :)

PS5 is still in beta and was released too early imo. the entire launch has been a disaster and has ruined sony's reputation with me.

they should have just started making these and not started selling them til about now. they oculd have had a much better launch and not been seen as a manufacturing joke where tehy cant even make units to supply their customers.

Tell that to the over 17 million PS5 owners. If someone in the US that wants a PS5 or Series X and hasn't gotten one yet, they're not doing it right.

is this a system update or just updates for games? I have a couple of those games, but they're not on my home list, which afaik, is the only stuff that updates automatically or even manually. my ps5 has not updated, so I assume it's not out yet.

I believe both? A system update, but the game devs also have to patch in the support. Maybe I'm wrong.

Game Pass Ultimate is also $14.99. Sonys "equivelent" service would be Premium as it also allows access to games on PC, for $17.99. Buying longer is a better deal though. 4 months Premium is $12.50 a month. 12 months Premium is $10 a month. Both cheaper than 4 or 12 months of Game Pass Ultimate. I'll be happy with both services. :)

Two things got my attention on this.

1- I learned now that it was not a feature yet, If I were to guess, I would say that even the PS4 Pro had that. G-Sync and specially Free-Sync are available in a lot of displays on sale now, I guess it goes beyond half of current displays. They made a huge deal about HDR years ago, I argue that for gaming it is less relevant than variable refresh rate.

2- those people love lists. Every single feature since PS4 Pro come with a list attached with it. NOTHING is system default, even PS4 support on PS5 is a list.

Sony is lucky that their only real competitor is Nintendo, that somewhat manages to be even more archaic tech wise on a tech business.
Bad take.

1. PS4 Pro does not have it, since it requires firmware-level support. VRR was never seen as a requirement for consoles since VSync is already stable enough in most console games (contrary to PC), however, they are now pushing this extra mile since the PS5/Series X can break the 60 FPS boundaries and there is a constant interest on using unlocked 30+ FPS. I agree about HDR though, not a big deal at all for consoles.

2. A list means higher precision + room for experimentation with new tech. What you mentioned is right, Nintendo sticks with the exact same firmware capabilities and very small software updates for 6+ years. Sony and Microsoft opt to make a constantly evolving platform. And boy, how Nintendo is afraid of technology (e.g. Switch's Tegra is more than 7 years old), let's not mention the Wii U was PowerPC.

VRR allows games to have better graphics with less compromises to motion. It's literally just an optional improvement. No idea why you're being to antogonistic towards this. :ha:

I don't know the numbers out of my head, but Nintendo and Playstation have like 30+ millions of subscribers each. The first charges monthly for 8mb roms, the later charges for games that once were huge, but now costs $1 used or even in their own online store. So I have my doubts if the installed base really is not a big deal like Microsoft fans keep repeating.

(about the service value, each one of those 8mb Nintendo roms worth more used than 50 xbox games, not that I agree that those huge used nintendo prices are right, but the market is what it is)

Not trying to hype up any of these subscriptions but those roms can be downloaded from a piracy site and played by the time an xbox even starts initiating the download for a game. Sure there is value in the physical versions of those games but there is still more value in even the xbox 360 games that Gold gives because its harder to emulate.

xbox 360 is pirate friendly indeed, but it do not matter, there is no value in almost anything digital if you consider piracy, but for people who don't pirate, those easy to emulate 8mb roms on NSO costs way more money to play legit than the huge 3D games on game pass.

As I said, I don't agree with the high cost of old games, most of them are junk treated as gold, but the market is what it is, and the market value is the only way to talk about value without being subjective, personal, or whatever.

I think a lot of people would call me stupid, but I did buy the expansion pack for nso. I've played all the way to ganon with oot, and I have a ways into paper Mario. I don't really feel robbed exactly, but I don't like how so few games are released for any of the platforms.

Now the PS5 is officially the best console for playing Elden Ring.

Context: Elden Ring can't cap 60fps on consoles, PS5 version runs at 50~60fps while Series X version runs at 40~55fps, before the only way to have a locked 60fps experience was to play the PS4 Pro version on PS5 but this version has a lower draw-distance, lower foliage density and lower resolution, but now with VRR it will be possible to have a fluid experience with the native version for PS5.

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60
