Why you updated the bios? I see in the other thread you were able to get the card to work.
I could install a driver for it so that it shows up in Device Manager as something other than Unknown Device, but it still doesn't work.

Cause to me , this is considered working , as it show Geforce940M, I had a similar case to your where I had to edit nvidia inf, I had a GTX 645M on a sager laptop normally doesn't support it, original card was a GTX 485M where I had to edit the inf. I just used that modified files even if I did windows feature update.

Mine shows up in Device Manager, but has errors and I can't actually install GeForce Experience or the nVidia Control Panel to use it.

M cards come with their own version of the control panel did you try installing it with the vendor provided driver packages?

https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/DriversForWin10/VGA/VGA_nVidia_Win10_64_VER101813538402.zip

Presuming you are on Windows 10 64bit.

If installing that package doesnt work, try to use DDU ( https://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html ) and then try installing it again. Keep the intel drivers, if it lets you chose.

If you are not on that Windows version, choose your Windows Version from the dropdown boxes here:

Thanks for the advice, but sadly I got this error both before and after running DDU (Fig. 1). Additionally, the GPU now shows up in Device Manager like this (Fig. 2) (no, clicking Update Driver doesn't work, either).

At what point do we say, that you have defective hardware... ;)

Try the stuff mentioned in here by Bossdweeb - maybe:
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...nized-on/bf896a73-6d2f-4bbc-acd6-7f0a4828bd2b

Also, backup your data and restore from a Restore partition or restore medium always is an option as well.

edit: Original Windows link for "how to prevent Windows from installing drivers" gets redirected by MS into nowhere. Maybe it was this:
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...r-driver/fddeed5b-16be-400e-9c84-feb0c5e1ebfd

Google around and see if you can find something better. Goal seems to be to set Windows to prevent automatic driver installs. Then do a DDU uninstall, and after the reboot, try a custom install with the ASUS driver Package linked. (So while Windows isnt identifying it as a 3D Video Controller, but probably as an unknown device).

edit2: Might also be this tool (that helps you preventing Windows 10 from installing a driver before you can do a custom install with the asus driver package), thats mentioned in the Bossdweeb posting I referred you to:
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...eshooter/17c39d9b-e31c-4eec-85d2-34add509a2da

Sorry, sounds like troubleshooting hell.. ;)

edit3: There is another GPU driver installer for the nVidia mobile card, on the Asus download page for your Laptop as well (I linked you the .02 version) you can try the other package as well. (Without the .02).
