Are you ready for a system software update? No, not for the Nintendo Switch, but the Wii U! It's been quite a while since we've seen one of these--the last update was issued in September of 2018, in fact. A brand new firmware update is available for the console, bringing it to version number 5.5.5. The official changelog is helpful as usual, giving us that magical sentence we can always expect from Nintendo. Keep an eye on this thread and hopefully we'll find out what exactly this update actually brings to the table.

Improvements to system stability and usability
  • Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience.

Stop with the stability jokes. It's an administrative update, nothing crazy or special, it happens all the time on all consoles.

Also, I am one of the two people who plays the Wii U and I'm proud. Wii U is king, Switch is crap. Change my mind.

1 of the two people here, still use my Wii U to play Fatal Frame IV and V and Xenoblade X from time to time...

.....until Nintendo finally decides to port those over to Switch :P
who said we were updating it
I didn’t expect to be graced with presence of both people who still game on the Wii U. I am humbled by this experience.

Maybe because the Shop is getting closed this Summer (America) ?

EDIT: It seems,it is a Worldwide Update.:P
So,yes please,go on and update all your Wii U´s and get rid of Haxchi and Company.

But wait,Wii U Users are maybe smarter than many Switch Users and avoid the Update ?

EDIT 2:

The Modding Guide is up to Date,so,have no Fear and update your Wii U.:P

This guide will work on all Wii U consoles in all regions on firmware 5.5.5 or below.

Update !

Nothing important has changed and no exploits have been fixed. Only a function for checking SSL certificates has been changed. At least we get a nice version number!

If Coldboot Haxchi doesn't work anymore after an update, just start the "DON'T TOUCH ME" title (yes, really), which opens the "Autobooting" menu - hold HOME and reinstall Coldboot Haxchi via the Homebrew Launcher.

I am sure all 2 people still playing the Wii U are chuffed to bits right now for this update.
What about those who use it for VC Injections? I know there's a Megaman Battle Network subreddit where some people are playing GBA and DS VC injections of those, so they'll probably love the stability if it doesn't break their cfw.

I don't even think they're happy for the update, given I can't imagine anyone still plays the Wii U unless it's to use as an emulation box...
Twilight Princess HD, The Wind Waker HD, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Virtual Console games from a variety of systems including DS.

I thought PS4/5 and Xbox One emulation would be kind of easy since they basically just a PC

    they sorta are a pc
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
They haslve dedicated on board chips that aren't tweaked like x64/x32 afaik

but its a custom os for both of them

    designed for only specific hardware
  • ColdBlitz @ ColdBlitz:
so you have to learn to emulate that specific hardware which isn't as easy as you'd think

It's a locked down Linux distro basically
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think the only custom hardware is to do with the SSD and a security chip
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
    Probably combined in one chip

They place married security chips onto boards iirc

Didn't see much need for a console, all the advantages have kind of disappeared
  • ColdBlitz @ ColdBlitz:
the ps3 used to support installing linux because the cpu was so powerful
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
Then the games are $70 and they want to reboot and refresh the same game every year

The ps3 was always Linux they just found a way to make it open source

I'm avoiding buying from the big 3 at all atm

At one point PC game pads where poorly supported, loading a game had setup, it was complicated. Now it's almost as easy as a console.
