Hi all, I have a slim PS3 CECH-2003A, running official firmware 4.86.

I've never been particularly interested in hacking it, but it's recently stopped loading Bluray discs. CDs and DVDs still work fine, but I have loads of PS3 games I'm no longer able to play, so am looking to hack it.

I have looked at the guides etc, and I'm sorry but can't be 100% certain - is my console hackable? If so, is there a preferred method?

I'm not a complete novice with hacking, I've done my Vita, Wii, DS various other things in the past, but the PS3 hacking seems a lot more complicated than any of those!

Apologies in advance for asking a question that I know I could find out for myself, but honestly I have looked it up and don't want to risk wrecking the console without double checking with you guys first.

Many thanks :)

EDIT: Is this page legit...? I mean it seems a bit too...easy?

All the info you need is on PSX-Place, I think your PS3 model is hackable, if not, you can still use HEN that provides nearly the same functionalities.

What I would check is if your Blu-ray issue will make you unable to hack your PS3, I know that it's impossible to some extent on dead disc drives, yours seems to work so it may be good, you will see in time

By the way, the link that you provided is 100% a fake, there is no method to install a CFW without using an exploit beforehand on recent firmware

Thanks all, I'll have a look in to this then. And yeah, that link seemed pretty fake. You have to wonder what the point of making fake sites like that is, I mean, what do they get out of it? So annoying.

Make you break your ps3 or install malware to steal your credit card details

He can install a real CFW on his console, there is no need for HEN.
I suggested HEN as it seems that you're less likely to get banned playing online without enabling HEN compared to CFW but yeah if he's console is compatible then better use CFW.

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

They probably said "Hey, why not we combine the two together and make a 'new' DS to sell".
  • Veho @ Veho:
It's a DS Lite in a slightly bigger DS Lite shell.

    It's not a Nintendo / iQue official product, it's a 3rd party custom.

Nothing special about it other than it's more comfortable than the Lite
    for people with beefy hands.

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

    but that's a long shot

i think only the red mario kart edition phat was v5

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

if i didn't want my games to be permanent, then i'd rent them

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.
  • AncientBoi @ AncientBoi:
    I don't pirate them, I Use Them :mellow:. Like I do @BigOnYa 's couch :tpi::evil::rofl2:

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
  • cearp @ cearp:
It's nice to not have to have a lot of physical things though, saves space
