this is really interesting to me. i bought a BOTW explorer's edition on black friday and the game did not contain an update. game is still on 1.0.0 and the console (which i also bought the same day) was a splatoon bundle that came with 3.0.0 firmware.

edit: i should say that this was in NA region and not EU.

At this rate, I think it is best that I buy the Switch when it is at/near EOL. I am actually not looking forward to playing BotW (not a fan of sandboxes), Super Mario Odyssey looks cool, but not good enough to buy a console for, and even though Metroid Prime 4 will probably be awesome, still not enough for me at this point, to buy a new console until I know I can mod it.

Just get it for BOTW anyway. You need to play it. It's also not a sandbox. It's open world and it's awesome.

Makes sense that they would work to close as many holes as they can. Saturate the market with updated carts, and make it harder for people to stay on older firmware.

Hmm maybe he clicked the game software update? Which requires a console update to proceed the process.
Edit: oh nvrm if it came with 3.01 by default then that is a problem. Only way to counter this issue is buying used cartridges

Except when the used cart has been updated by the original owner. Then it should have update info and new game crypto. This will be interesting to see how this plays out. Would be awesome to find a way to update similar to the psp and the PS3.

No. The carts themselves can't be updated. They're completely read-only.

I bought Pokemon Tekken at black friday sell aswell (EU) for updating my second switch from 2.3.0 to 3.0.0 soon...now I'm a bit afraid if these games got updated aswell. Is there any information already how to check this? The game is still unopened so if I could figure out if this is a updated version I still could send it back to amazon.

All Pokken from EU Amazon are 3.00. Tried and tested last week.

The only question I haven't seen asked is did you put in your internet credentials? If so the cart itself may not have had the 3.01 update on it.. The only way to know if the update was on the cart itself is to have never put in your wifi/lan etc. I would say you put in your wifi password and you were asked to update which I have had many times on my 3.0 console.

That would have updated to the newest version.
