I need suggestions & reccomendations for a new motherboard. My Cpu is bottlenecking me (AMD A4-5000) and I want to switch to an intel mobo with the following specifications. I need:
4 ddr3 slots
pci-Express x16 slot (for my GTX 960)
MiniPCI slot (for my bluetooth/wifi card)
at least 4 Sata ports
and a socket that supports an intel i5 QUAD CORE @ 3.0 Ghz or better.

my current mobo has a Laptop CPU the (AMD a4-5000, quad core @1.5 GhZ) but uses desktop ram, ddr3 DIMMS. it's weird, it's AMD, and I don't like it, plus the fact that my CPU bottlenecks like the dickens. if yourrecommended mobo doesn't have a MINI PCI slot, something like a PCI slot with an adapter of some sort that enables me to use my wifi/bluetooth card would be fine as well. Thanks in advance.

Don't know why you think AMDs are weird when they are the simplest processors in existence, but oh well...

You are a hard customer, expecting something good with an Intel CPU, one of the best you can find it this one (has pretty much everything you need while having some room for improvement too):
https://pcpartpicker.com/product/x8M323/gigabyte-motherboard-gab150md3hddr3

It's most likely isn't gonna be cheap though as DDR3 Motherboards are getting pretty rare at this point...

And you know, if the only problem you are having is really your CPU, why do something so big to change rather than just getting a Ryzen? I mean, you already have all the parts you need, the motherboard supports Ryzen because it's AMD and not Intel (that forces you to change mobo every 3 processors) and will solve you the CPU bottleneck issue at lower a price than the i5 alone!:P

Mostly Because my CPU is not socketed. I CAN'T change it out.

Any idea what model the board is? It'd be nice to know what RAM type it uses (plus I'm morbidly curious)
it uses ddr3 DIMMs.

This probably.

Mini ITX board with soldered cpu. Only board Asrock do with a A4 cpu.
yepp. That's the one, Oh, Holy one. XD
EDIT: actually, it isn't. I have 4 sata slots. Mine is a QC5000-ITX. Link: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157574

If you're bothering to upgrade the motherboard and CPU I'd suggest to buy new RAM and power supply too. At that point you're building a new computer but it's better than buying parts that don't work or work well with the old parts.

We need more info about your RAM like clock speed, what your power supply is rated at and if your new motherboard will fit in it's old case. Since your old motherboard is a mini ITX size then I'm assuming your case is too. Unfortunately there is no mini ITX motherboard that has 4 ram slots and a mini PCI that I could find that works with a Haswell i5.

I can certainly fit a bigger board in my case. especialy one tha's server-esque. clock speed for my ram is 1366 Mhz and my power supply is...DC output 300W. need any more info?

So @Darthlink9, I'm guessing you want to go as modern as you can while keeping your DDR3 RAM, or do you want to roll back to Haswell (4th gen) for cheaper parts at expense of upgradability, orrrrr...?

yeah, basically keep my RAm, My GTX 960, and my wifi/Bluetooth card. I've got 2X 4GB cards off Ram, wanna add 2X more 4GB or eventually work up to 32 GB or 64 GB if possible.

If you're gonna keep the RAM and go with a Haswell i5 then make sure its good RAM otherwise you're just making another bottleneck. Instead of your CPU being too slow your RAM will be too slow.

Please don't spread misinformation about ryzen. Ryzen only works on am4 boards with ddr4.

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
  • cearp @ cearp:
It's nice to not have to have a lot of physical things though, saves space
