I keep seeing posts and stuff about people going berserk over the Switch hacking and how it'll cause the Switch to die and such. So I'm curious what's the rough percentage of total people who hack their 3DS, and the rough percentage of people who hack/want to hack the Switch? From being a member on GBATemp it seems like a high number but I'm only looking at just the people on here and not the total people who have the consoles.

As of this post, there are 369,398 members in GBATemp. There has already been over 2.74 million consoles sold and more to be sold.

Also, take note that not all members here on GBATemp want to hack a switch, own a switch, nor even plan on getting one. And likewise, not everyone who wants the hack the switch exists only on GBATemp. So give or take, and come up with a percentage you'd like to believe.

I have 3 guidelines to when I hack my systems
1: System is dead and no longer getting support. This means no matter what I do, the market is already over for the system and thus I won't be effecting the company.
2: System completely flopped. There's not much I can to help save the system and in most cases the system falls under the first.
3: System was complete success and it's several years down the road. Basically I end up being 1% of the market. Although in those cases I aim to hack for things like trying to help the homebrew community more than anything else and or backing up my own games because I hate trying to carry around more than one game at a time.

The Switch is too early to tell, but most likely will end up in 3.

It's a small percentage, but my philosiphy is: If I can hack it, I do. Unless it's a system called "WiiU" (collects too much dust to hack)
Also, In the 12 or so friends 3DS's I've hacked, I'd say maybe 1 or 2 would have hacked their own, had I never brought it to their attention.

I know hacking has little to no impact on a console's success, so I hack as early as possible. At this point, I can't really think of a console Ive purchased without the intentions of hacking. If console hacks weren't possible I'd just be a pc gamer.

agreed. after my discussion with you yesterday, i realized the real and only reason I bought a switch (besides ARMS) was to hack it

I just wanted smash mods on my 3ds so I never took any of that into consideration o.o I suppose those are good guidlines for trying not to effect it with piracy...

If emulators exist I'm there! :ninja:
I thought hacking made consoles more successful to be honest. Having hacks makes it more appealing to buy. :)
Though I'm a fan of rom hacks, I like seeing how people manage to alter a game.... for better or worst. Usually someone out there who feel the game isn't hard enough and wanna make it completely a challenged they feel nintendo is too afraid to give someone. Well let me say Nintendo was never afraid to give players a challenge. Super mario lost levels have poison mushrooms, windy weather effects, spring that launch you off screen for 10 seconds and into pits, and warp zones that send you back levels you completed. (Yes I MEAN SUPER MARIO BROS 2 ON FAMICOM DISK SYSTEM WITH NO SAVE OPTION) Zelda 2 adventure of link is brutally hard, and zelda 1 had a second quest much harder, and lets not forget ocarina of time master quest.

Then some find the game too hard and want to make it accessible without feeling like is too easy. :)

Okay i got off track but basically I like mods for various reasons. All the sonic rom hacks with the Chiptune coded music from other games or just new composed ones is cool, enhanced graphics people thought sega genesis wasn't capable of, how people sure work within system limitations to make it look presentable and playable. That is what i like seeing, putting someone skill and (console hardware capabilities) to the test. MAXIMUM POWER! :nayps3:

Piracy is not the reason why i want hacks, is emulators and rom hacks. Maybe if games was good and worth paying $60 for instead of releasing incomplete buggy broken unplayable.... boring, total flawed and clearly mislead marketed overhyped games, there would be "LESS" (not none, but less) of that piracy going on. Then again, people like things when is free! :ninja:

I buy all the games I want until a hack comes out, then I pirate the games I didn't want enough to buy them.
i may still buy some games on a hacked console if I like them enough but generally I will just pirate from that point on.
The number of games I pirate that I would have bought if a hack wasn't available ends up being smaller than the number of games I actually buy every time.
Plus some games I buy do turn out to not be worth the money, so I feel like I owe it to the devs to pirate something of theirs to make up for it. Might be weird reasoning, but I'm a weird guy.
I won't say that it justifies piracy, but morally I don't think there's anything wrong with that. I'm still giving them lots of money so I don't feel bad about pirating the games that I do, except in rare cases where a game is so good I end up buying it anyway. For example BotW on Wii U, which I ended up buying the limited edition of on Switch anyway.

Every console I can think of falls into one of those categories. Well except the PSP which got hacked really early on, but I didn't get one until later.

I bought Tekken Tag Tournament 2 for wii u a month ago, yes I know I can get it for free. But I bought it. :creep:
I bought Shovel Knight on switch and I already had it on wii u (PAID), Yes I know I can get it for free.
keptical
Then again I usually don't buy full price games, cause lately video game industry got me skeptical to trust $60 game is worth it. :(

70€ for a videogame is just too much. I bought Breath of the wild (the only 70€ exception) and the expansion pass and bought more switch games, like Minecraft and Shovel Knight. Will still buy games like Sonic Mania, Binding of Issac, STARDEW VALLEY, etc.

but the moment that piracy becomes available on the Switch i'll start pirating the expensive ones. The ones that i love i will buy them like i always did.

And i always hack my consoles. Hacked my N3DSXL and will hack my Switch when i can. When i pay for hardware, i want to be able to fully use its capabilities.

The only problem I have with hacking is that when it gathers too much attention (like spawn wave on YouTube reporting in on every little bit of detail he can, even the recent kernel dump), it'll make Nintendo act on it a lot harder because more people will know about it. Too much publicity = bad.

Granted, I personally think its up to the user what they do. I would be satisfied with just emulators and maybe save editing.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. The hacking community should be small. So I really hate it when well-known people spread info about hacking. (like this one)
Because more people pouring into the hacking community = more pirates and cheaters incoming = less money for developers / more cheaters online :O

Watched like 15 seconds of that video before I had to close it. Full access? No. Dumped kernel doesn't give you full access just like that. There's more that has to be done to get full access, even user land. Could at least do fact checking before proclaiming the end of the world.

I'm not hacking my Switch unless a flash cart comes out for it that will work on the latest firmware and without the possibility of being banned from online play for playing backups. Just keeping all my 3DS apps, B9S, and Luma updated is annoying enough.

I am not really looking forward to playing poorly-optimized emulators on the Switch. I can already do that with my Shield Portable.

Nope, i won't hack my Switch.
I hacked my Wii U once, just to cheat in Twilight Princess and Hyrule Warriors.

Emulators aren't fun, and i couldn't care less about pirated games.

60 EUR for a game isn't that much money if you have a job.
And the reasoning that if you think that a game is to expensive gives you the right to pirate it you are more stupid than Donald Trump.

@SylverReZ, I also heard one of the Prince of Persia games was so unfinished that it required the "24/7 online" drm so a puzzle could be done and the game could be finished. And that when the Ubisoft servers were closed the (cracked) game was impossible to finish or something like that
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Xdqwerty, That's extra scummy. Ubisoft nowadays ship out incomplete games like Skull and Bones which was being worked on for nearly a decade now.
