okay bit of a noob question, think my firmware is 9.8.0-12e is there a way to get it a bit more updated to to install latest cfw?
Follow https://3ds.guide. If you have any issues ask us before you try anything that deviates from the guide, you should get a quick response (just try and be detailed about what you are up to and what is going wrong).

You don't need to update to follow 3ds.guide. After you install A9LH you can update through system settings.

Is it faster to charge o3ds with the cable or the dock or is there no difference
Not sure, but I think there is no difference.
It is just easier and faster to put the 3DS on the dock rather than manually connecting the cable to the console (wow much seconds saved lol)

So I'm following the guide on a Old 3DS XL on 11.3.0-36E however I'm unsure if I need to follow this part of the guide:

Is that including the old XL model as well?

Yes, an Old 3DS XL is just an Old 3DS with... well... bigger screens.

I've got Luma3DS on an o3DSXL and i'm looking for a flashcart. I'll likely only ever be playing DS games on it, but i'm still rather confused about what cards work with what consoles. I keep coming across posts saying the DSTT works fine, but then others saying it doesn't work at all. any help on this?
it would be nice if the card works with both old and new 3DSes since i'll be getting a n2DS later this year.

The DSTT was blocked in system updates a while ago, but Luma lets old flashcarts work again. So if you only use it on a system with luma, it'll be fine.

So here's my noob question, which I cannot find ANYWHERE in any guide: How do I backup my legitimately purchased DSiWare files that are inside of my Nintendo 3DS's SD memory? I have Hourglass9 installed, but I cannot find TitleID info for DSiWare games I have, such as Zelda: Four Swords Anniversary Edition or X-Scape. I don't wanna go online and download other people's. I simply want to archive my own. Would love some guidance on whether I'm doing this all wrong.

Go to that 3DS Guide, go to GodMode9 Usage, scroll down to Dumping a Title. It should tell you how. You can look up the title ID on that 3ds titlekey site, or just launch FBI, go to Titles, select the game, and you should be able to see the title ID for the game on the top screen.
