Updating from rxTools to Luma3DS

Follow https://3ds.guide to install Boot9strap, the latest and best setup you can have. It's super easy to setup, highly recommended to make the switch. Stop using EmuNAND and menuhax!!
Also, there's a step in the guide that has you move EmuNAND to sysNAND. So you won't lose any of your stuff in the end.

If you want personal one on one help with the process, send me a PM or let me know in a reply. It's also much quicker with my help than doing it on your own.

My O3DS XL had always been on rxTools (bootable via MSET) while its sysnand is on 8.1.0-19U.

Following this guide, it said about copying "Luma3DS.dat from the mset-spider folder to the root of the SD" which surmises as leaving the "Luma3DS.dat" as is whereas this guide tells about the need to rename it to "launcher.dat."

Specifically, this guide says: "5. Rename Luma3ds.dat file to launcher.dat"

Which exactly is the step that I should follow?

[Update]

I tried either way, none worked in making Luma3DS boot from my unit after transitioning from a formerly working rxTools setup (via MSET).

I also even resorted to using Luma3DS NDS launcher via a DS Flash Cart and choosing to patch for "6.X" since there is no option aside from 4.X and 6.X, but to no avail.

[Update]

I made this thread at Luma3DS's GitHub page: https://github.com/AuroraWright/Luma3DS/issues/380

4. In the Luma3DS zip, go into the "MSET" folder and drag and drop the Luma3DS.dat file to the root of your SD, replacing any that exists.
5. Rename Luma3ds.dat file to launcher.dat
6. Delete the rxTools folder

Now when you open System Settings > Other Settings > Profile > Nintendo DS Profile it will boot into Luma3DS CFW

Doesn't work at all :(
I tried both renaming the file as launcher.dat and rxTools.dat but every time is just crashes the same way as if there was no sd inserted :( and after updating the emunand it doesn't boot anymore

1. This guide is very old
2. It's been forever since I used that old setup so I can't really tell you how to fix it anymore
3. You're better off with Arm9loaderhax, it's super easy to setup these days and it's way better.

well how to do it? the thing is I don't really want to lose all my saves which are on emu nand :(
BTW does luma work on 6.x? because I read somewhere that I'd need an update to 9.x

You won't lose your saves or anything like that. You'll eventually come across a step where you move emunand to sysnand, then delete emunand. If your sysnand is on 6.x, you can start setting up Arm9loaderhax from there, you dont have to be on 9.x

Did not work with me as well. I assume the latest build of Luma3DS has got to do with this i.e. it was patched for better compatibility with A9LH but render MSET obsolete. I remember someone from GitHub suggesting using an older version of Luma3DS to make MSET work. Sadly, older versions of Luma3DS are no longer being hosted at GitHub.

In the end, I just went through the A9LH route in trying to make Luma3DS run with my O3DS XL. Luckily, the process was successful.

I see. Could you give me a link how to make an update to Arm9loaderhax then. BTW I'm not sure if my emunand is even working anymore since I made an update and then when it restarted it gives a black screen on boot (because of rxtools being banned), the hell i could not even find the emu nand files on my SD :/

I just got an an o3ds on 4.5 that boots rxTools with mset. I was asked to update the emunand to 11.4 so I would need to swap rxtools for luma.

My question is, can you boot luma on 4.5 with mset? I don't want to update the sysnand, just swap the files and launcher.dat on the sdcard.

I am not getting money for it so I can not spend more like 10 minutes on it. Also this is not my console, so I am not going to touch the sysnand or update on something I do not own. My question is, can I swap the launcher.dat files and be done, or does luma not boot from 4.5? In that case, would ReiNand?

So I have an o3ds at 6.00 and was wondering if I could install Luma3ds? since I heard rxtools is outdated and pretty much bc Im being left out of fun english patch games.

SO I have rxtool installed and am at ver 6.0.0 in system firmware? do I have to do an update to 9.0.0? or can I stay at 6.0.0 and still be able to move to luma3ds?

I'll help you setup Arm9loaderhax with Luma3DS, which is the best setup to have right now. You can stay on 6.0.0 and still set everything up from there. Meet me on Discord : 3

I've seen multiple users ask how they could update both their EmuNAND and CFW, as they're still using rxTools and haven't touched their 3DS in months. I decided to write a quick guide on how to upgrade for those who are outdated. This is for those who refuse to install Arm9loaderhax and want to remain on Menuhax + EmuNAND or MSET + EmuNAND

EDIT: If anyone wants help installing Arm9loaderhax, I'll personally walk you through it one on one. Message me if interested!

Downloads

Steps for Menuhax users:

1. Put your 3DS SD card into your computer
2. Open the Luma3DS zip file you downloaded above
3. Extract the arm9loaderhax.bin file to the root of the SD
4. In the Luma3DS zip, go into the "menuhax" folder and drag and drop the boot.3dsx file to the root of your SD, replacing any that exists.

NOTE: If you were using something like lesshax (A menuhax payload), menuhax would look for a file called less.3dsx on the root rather than boot.3dsx. You'll either need to rename luma's .3dsx file to less.3dsx, or download another 9.2 ropbin payload from HERE
so that menuhax will look for boot.3dsx by default.
This is a fix for those who still have rxTools booting up after placing luma's boot.3dsx file on the root.

Now when you turn on your 3DS, it will automatically boot straight into Luma3DS, considering you have menuhax installed already.

Steps for MSET users:

1. 1. Put your 3DS SD card into your computer
2. Open the Luma3DS zip file you downloaded above
3. Extract the arm9loaderhax.bin file to the root of the SD

For those who don't have menuhax installed:

NOTE: You must be on 9.0 / 9.2 to install menuhax

1. Download Menuhax Manager HERE
2. Temporarily replace the boot.3dsx file with homebrew launcher's boot.3dsx , placing it on the root of the SD
3. Turn on the 3DS and change the theme to any color, even if you have a theme set already.
4. Launch browserhax by holding L+R while on the home menu to bring up the camera, touch the checkerboard icon to bring up QR, then scan this QR CODE HERE
The browser will load up and so will the exploit
5. Once on Homebrew Launcher, choose menuhax manager
6. Press A on "install" and let it do it's thing. It's normal for it to show errors in the log.
7. Once it's done, return to the menuhax manager main menu, select "Configure menuhax"
8. Choose type 1, then touch the touch screen once. This allows menuhax to automatically boot the boot.3dsx file with no buttons held as soon as you turn the 3DS on.
9. Turn off the 3DS, and put the boot.3dsx from the luma3DS.zip's menuhax folder back on your SD card's root and replace. Now when you turn your 3DS on, it will automatically boot into Luma3DS CFW on emuNAND.

Final tips

- When you first launch Luma3DS, you'll be greeted with a configuration menu which is one time only. Only option you should select is "Show NAND or user string in system settings", then press start to reboot.

- You can update your EmuNAND to 11.1.0. Go to system settings, look on top to see if it says "Emu x.x.x", then go to other settings and do a system update. This updates EmuNAND to 11.1.0, while keeping sysNAND on 9.2 (The exploitable firmware, the reason you're able to use CFW in the first place)

- You can use out of region DLC with Luma3DS, using it's "Language Emulation Plugin" feature. Learn how to use it HERE
I'm new in this forum, please can you help me to update from rxtool to Arm9loaderhax?
