Press Release
Detachable Controllers Reinvent Gaming

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- In an introductory video released today, Nintendo provided the first glimpse of its new home gaming system and revealed that it is called Nintendo Switch. In addition to providing single and multiplayer thrills at home, the Nintendo Switch system also enables gamers to play the same title wherever, whenever and with whomever they choose. The mobility of a handheld is now added to the power of a home gaming system to enable unprecedented new video game play styles.

At home, Nintendo Switch rests in the Nintendo Switch Dock that connects the system to the TV and lets you play with family and friends in the comfort of your living room. By simply lifting Nintendo Switch from the dock, the system will instantly transition to portable mode, and the same great gaming experience that was being enjoyed at home now travels with you. The portability of Nintendo Switch is enhanced by its bright high-definition display. It brings the full home gaming system experience with you to the park, on an airplane, in a car, or to a friend’s apartment.

Gaming springs into action by removing detachable Joy-Con controllers from either side of Nintendo Switch. One player can use a Joy-Con controller in each hand; two players can each take one; or multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options. They can easily click back into place or be slipped into a Joy-Con Grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, if preferred, the gamer can select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller to use instead of the Joy-Con controllers. Furthermore, it is possible for numerous people to bring their Nintendo Switch systems together to enjoy local multiplayer face-to-face competition.

“Nintendo Switch allows gamers the freedom to play however they like,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO, Nintendo of America. “It gives game developers new abilities to bring their creative visions to life by opening up the concept of gaming without boundaries.”

Developers can design their games supporting a variety of play styles, which gives gamers the freedom to choose an experience that best suits them. Some of the publishers, developers and middleware partners announcing support for Nintendo Switch are as follows:

I like the console, but I have the feeling that over time enthusiasm will fade away and that third-parties will drop it just like they did with the Wii U. I simply can't imagine people buying a triple A game for the NX (yes I call it NX) and developers develop triple A titles for the NX while they buy/develop the same games for the much more powerful Xbox Scorpio and PS4Pro/PS5 in the future. I think third-parties will develop their games first on Xbox/Playstation and have smaller teams port the games over to the NX, eventually abandoning the NX due to low review scores and sales.

Hm... So let's nip this in the bud right now. Will this system's library be all digital? Forgive me if I missed it, but I don't see anywhere on this system to put in a cartridge or a disc. It looks to be backwards compatible with the Wii U, but where do we put our discs?

Well, this is what we have been waiting for, a console/handheld hybrid in tablet form using a Tegra chip. It was expected and it seems all the leaks were true after all.

I am definitely buying one at some point. Playing Skyrim comfortably on my bed is all i need. SKYRIM ON MY BED!

1080p isn't going anywhere any time soon, and the vast majority of games playable on first-gen XB1s and PS4s will also be playable on this. Developers always attempt to allow for that much scaling in their graphics at a minimum.

I agree that they will shoehorn in Switch ports, but I wouldn't be surprised if they sold well. I think being able to play a game made for home consoles on the go (even if it is at 720p 10 fps) is huge. It's not a gimmick. And it's something neither Sony or Microsoft can come close to.

The video does show a cartridge (or at least what seems to be one) being inserted (at around 0:54). Edit: Ninja'd!!

What I'd be interested in finding out is if this hybrid console will be region-locked or not.

Also, I assume that both controller parts (that attach to the right and left of tablet) would run on batteries and have to be charged as well?

I'd imagine they would charge from the system when docked and/or the controller with a regular charging cable (probably sold separately...)

Either way, there WILL be third-party charging docks / controller mounts with extended batteries...

naah, I feel like they'd work like the gamepad, but to charge them, they just plug into the controller docks (the portable screen/home controller dock-thing)

Good graphics aren't defined just by the resolution. You can have 1080p and bad graphics. In the long run the NX won't really compete with Xbox One and PS4, but rather with Xbox Scorpio and PS4Pro/PS5.

Wow. That looks like a day one purchase from me!

I do have to say that I'm kind of disappointed Rockstar and EA aren't on their list. I know, I know. Gamers hate EA but they publish some of the most profitable and played games on consoles, besides the pessimism of EAness, they also tend to release good games so there's that.

Without Rockstar that means no RDR3 on NS. :( Or maybe they'll join up later. :)
