So, I have a question, on part 5 of the A9LH setup, would you be able to use a backup of your own Gateway Emunand or do you have to use your Rednand emunand backup?

just wondering for experimental purposes.

There is no need to setup a RedNAND. I think the guide author is just obsessed with that word or something. You can just use your regular GW EmuNAND for the process. It will work fine.

Wait, so how do you get Gateway's payload to work? I get the Gateway menu, but when I try to go into EmuNAND or SysNAND, it gets stuck on a black screen. (Already have A9LH installed through Plailect's guide)

You could always try another boot manager. I have most of them all pre-configured and available for download HERE (I didn't do arm9loaderhay, it's good for keeping kids out of GodMode9 I guess, but it's quite tricky to setup, and much like Arch Linux, anyone using it probably doesn't need my help). There are some files I can't include here of course, like CFW folders, but there's a file with completely AIO setups on a certain iso site ("CFW Discussions" forum). Just drag and drop. I recommend BootCTR9, but the main CBM9 build and A9S seem to work well also.

I have heard on these forums that for some reason the chainloader of Luma3DS does not work with the GW payload. I chose a long time ago to not use the Luma3DS chainloader and utilize @FIX94 arm9select (customized by me) for all my payload loading needs.

All my payloads are in a payloads folder on the root of mSD/SD and use the following buttons
Default = CFW.bin
the following buttons can be used: a,b,x,y,up,down, left, right,l,r,start and select
works great for me (though you need a A9LH which has screen init)

my setup in my sig

I've always preferred BootCTR9 myself. It can run .dat files because it uses a configuration file. Not that I do. If there's no .bin, I'll cut the file myself with a hex editor, but it could be useful for noobs. Also, there's no need to rename files to buttons so you forget what they are. It also has the ability to set screen brightness (and do screen init). Most importantly, it seems to just run everything I throw at it without issue. But to each their own. I include A9S in my archive now.

This thread is actually weird.., to most user issues the solution given is "just use Plailect's guide".

This is a GW beta thread for a reason, unless peeps familiar with A9LH give their inputs on what's currently wrong with GW's method or what could be done to make it better / more open, we're moving in circles.

Clearly they've listened between 4.0b1 and 4.01b2 so there's certainly more room for improvement.

What feedback are GW gonna take from this thread / how are they gonna make 4.0 better is what's expected from this thread.
"just use plailect's guide" just helps individuals in a hurry to get onto the A9LH train and not much else...

So..In my few month absence did the site rules change...? We weren't allowed to link to Gateway's website because they use copyrighted code in their files.

There's only two things they need to do. Replace the nag with firm protection code, and either have their A9LH installer install an A9LH that uses "arm9loaderhax.bin" or add a chain loader to the CFW. That last one seems incredibly unlikely. It's extremely unlikely they're even reading this thread though. The official thread is on MaxC, and the official way to contact them is via e-mail.

OK, three -- they also need to fix their updater/downgrader. But I've already got the downgrades done for most of the people I know that needed it already, so, not something I need. The existing ones work well enough for me.

You have a good point, but most user just wants A9LH the sooner possible, so the safest way for them is to follow Plailect's guide. Those who have a hardmod and know exactly how A9LH works usually already are on Maxconsole to let Gateway knows about the problems that they encounter. The majority of this topic reader does not have a hardmod, so they should not try Gateway's A9LH installation.

Pretty sure that's not it. I also used the X button (After moving the uncart payload somewhere else) and still get the same results (a black screen after trying to get into GW mode).
do you have the Gateway launcher.dat in the root of your SD?

I couldn't have said it better.
This a GW thread indeed, and people should respond with things related to GW, not giving the complete GW-free method of doing so, it completely misses the point.

If there are people trying to use this to setup A9LH with other CFW, let them try and try to help by using GW methods to an extent.
If they are THAT desperate and they brick, well, sucks for them, but it's called a BETA for a reason...
And the lack of patience always comes with a price.

While I see the point, some people does not know that there is a safer way to install A9LH than Gateway's installation. It is not because YOU have the knowledge that everyone has it. I would have tried Gateway's installation if someone didn't tell me to see Plailect's guide, and I would have bricked, since it was at the time that Gateway's A9LH didn't unbrick N3DS EmuNAND. Yes it is a beta, but with Gateway, everything is a beta since months and months ago, so some people, including me, are desensitized to the word "Beta".

The point of saying that is for people that are "jumping back into the modding community" wont get a brick and freak out from gateways problems. It has more of a chance of bricking than following the plailect guide. The people that are told to not use gw tm probably have a 0% chance of having a hard mod or knowing what the gateway tm app is doing. Its not like im here saying "Oh hey advanced user that knows everything about everything! Fuck Gateway and use something SAFER. Im not doing that though am I? People come in here and say "why isnt it working for my N3DS?" Do you want them to brick? They clearly just started looking into it and would like a fix. Now if I just said "Just keep trying! It will work sooner or later!", and they bricked. They would be like wtf i listened to you??? Its better to guide people to something safer that, even though takes more time to complete, won't have a bigger chance of bricking and being screwed than to just give them something that is broken and watch them break their machine. Yes it solves nothing, but its better to stop someone who has less knowledge of this. :/ Im not calling people stupid here, just that they might be misinformed of what is the best option right now.

I'd also like to point out that while this Private Beta is now openly public. Gateway's Private Beta Page has this disclaimer directly there:
"DISCLAIMER: Files on this page should be treated with extreme care and only used by advanced users who have access to a way to restore their 3DS NAND. Users should have a valid/known good copy of their NAND before proceeding! Use at your own risk!"

No one should be recommending GW's method. The feedback GW should be taking is from users who have hardmods or actually understand the risks. Plailect's guide is pretty noob-friendly and has a lot of safety nets so you don't brick. Since GW has now released a compatible a9lh.bin for standard A9LH setups, it makes more sense for noobs to follow Plailect's guide, if they want A9LH and have the patience to read and go through the guide.

For the GW users that don't care about being locked down to GW-A9LH and are also noobs, they should just wait until GW releases a more polished method, recommending something that GW clearly says "Use at your own risk!" does not sit well with me.

is there anyway to use other names with the bin files instead of y.bin i could use say luma_y.bin.

Arm9 works fine for me but I am having trouble reading which is bloody which as theres so many of them.

It's as if the life of some people depended on getting that a9lh as soon as possible. Is simply waiting so hard? Just wait. A slower boot time won't kill. If a noob were to ask me to install GW-a9lh I'd just tell him to wait; if the future full release were to suck, then I'd do what you guys are doing now with Plailect and all these workarounds. Just wait for fucks sake.

How to setup (N3DS):
  • Boot into GATEWAY 3DS menu using your favorite entrypoint
  • Pick the format emuNAND option from the menu (if you don’t have a working emuNAND setup yet)
  • Boot into GATEWAY (emuNAND) mode
  • Make sure you have WiFi configured and working correctly
  • Bring up the OSD, select GATEWAY Time Machine
  • Launch GATEWAY Time Machine, select 2.x downgrade
  • Boot back into GATEWAY 3DS menu after rebooting
  • Select A9LH Installer menu option, follow instructions on screen
  • Boot your N3DS into 2.x (if console doesn’t boot make sure ‘Nintendo 3DS’ folder has been renamed)
  • Open up web browser and surf to http://go.gateway-3ds.com/
  • Go to A9LH Installer menu option again, follow instructions on screen until congratulations message appears.
  • Reboot your console and enjoy GATEWAY A9LH on your N3DS!

Sorry for the noob question (again), but what do I need now for this entrypoint on a New 3DS? Still Ocarina of Time? Or is there a GW method I don't know about?

Um... Menuhax, Browserhax, Freakyhax, Ninjahax, Vhax etc..?
These are indead things I heard about - but do I need a specific game for this to get it to work? Just used GW all the time, since it was enough for my needs.

What firmware are you on? If you are below and on 10.7, then you can use Browserhax, which do not need any game..

Also, if you still own Ocarina of Time and can boot into GW menu, then you can use that to do all the above steps.. but, in my opinion, you should follow Pilal's guide to set up A9LH..

I'm planning to buy a blue New 3DS, so something above 10.0 I guess?
