If you dumped a save at a certain time, only replaced sav.bin, and didn't open the game until you installed the edited one, the secure value is not your problem; but the most reliable way you can bypass the secure value is by using SaveDataFiler, finding the game in the first tab (as if you were to extract a save), and pressing R+X

If the save comes from an emulator, try to find an "export battery" option in the original emulator!
I was using an early version of JK's Manager (probably the first one lol) and after updating it worked!

Earlier today, I managed to use an older version of JK's Save Manager to import my old Yellow save (with my original legit Mew circa late 90s/early 2000s) into the English VC version.

Edit: Make sure your save is exactly 32 KB (32,768 bytes). If it's not, and it comes from an emulator, then as previously suggested, make sure you're exporting the battery save in its original format, not an emulator save state or emulator-specific format. Those of you who have a Retron 5 can dump the saves from your old cartridges (if they still exist) with that, then use a program I found to convert those Retron 5 saves to their original format.

Hey guys. I was wondering, do You think it would be possible to move an old .sav of Pokemon Red to 3DS Virtual Console? I still have my saved game file from ~15 years ago, when I was a little kid, with my first Pokemon. I always wanted to move them to newer games, and I heard that it would be possible with Pokemon Sun/Moon :).
I'm in the same boat and WILL find a way to do this. Very interesting feature for them to announce!

Yes it is possible, I have personally transferred a save from a retail cartridge into these new VC releases (via mega memory card and ems flash cart)
Saves from emulators work also and are easier since they are the same just need renamed.

When I imported I didn't worry about secure values since I just exported the save and replaced the sav.dat then reimported which left the secure values matching.

I used savedatafiler to extract it from the VC game,

and it runs on an emulator.

(just change the .dat to .sav)

edit:

I'm on sysnand 9.1J and emunand 10.6J,
using RXtools.

No more fuss. Lemme explain this.

- Get a .sav file, either from an old playthrough, or from the Internet. Like this one, for example.
- Start a ROM of the game in an emulator (like VBA-M) with the same name as the sav and in the same folder as the sav.
- The save should load
- Export the battery save (VBA-M: File > Export > Battery File)
- Start a save on your 3DS VC
- Export the save through a save manager (like JK's)
- Get to the 3DS save you dumped
- Check your battery save's size. It has to be 32KB to work.
- Rename your battery save to sav.dat
- Replace the sav.dat in the 3DS save with the sav.dat from your computer.
- Reinject your save through a save manager (like JK's)
- Boot your VC game
- ???
- Profit

This works a lot better than hex editing the rtc data and header for save files, might be worth pointing out though that opening the game/using an older securevalue (the 8 byte file with the save dump) can cause a "save file was destroyed" error when you get to the continue screen

So when we have the sav from the original game, we just open it with a PC emulator, export batery, and put it again in the VC once we rename it into sav.da, am I right?

Do I need a flashcart or a modded console to export/import this save file? If yes, ten which option would be cheaper? I'm asking cause I'm new to 3DS :)

I managed to import the 16 year old save from my original Red and Yellow cartridges on to the 3DS, i've created a detailed guide with pictures / screenshots for anyone who's struggling: Pokemon GameBoy / Rom Save Transfer To 3DS

I think it's pretty awesome it will finally be possible to transfer Pokemon from GEN1 to the current gen, fingers crossed for a Gold / Silver & Crystal virtual console release at some point too!

I'm also quite impressed the batteries in my Red and Yellow carts are still working after 16 years too!

Could you share the link for the program that convert Retron5 saves to original format?

i gotta say fuck captain falcon, because he's hot (no homo), marry samus, because she seems like good wife (or as BigOnYa says, wifey) material, and kill wario, because he can't die, so killing him won't really kill him

My state has put a heavy tax on vape juice, taxing any juice with nicotine by the weight/oz. So to get around the bs, my local vape store only sells 0 nicotine vape juices, then they also sell straight nicotine in tiny bottles, and you mix it yourself to your 0% juice, lol
