Someone will set up a new server that people can play on by tweaking their Wii U's internet settings. It's happened before with the Wii.

I think a feature of the NX will be its ability to play Wii U games but also offer updates for those Wii U titles only accessible for those playing on the NX.

For example, I don't think the next Smash Bros game will be built from the ground up, instead I think it will essentially be a large expansion of new content for Smash 4, but the new content may only be accessible if you play the game on the NX. This way, Nintendo could sell the new Smash title at retail as an NX title with everything that Smash game will have to offer, all the Wii U content plus the new large update as a single release for those that didn't buy the Wii U version, and then Smash Wii U owners could just install the expansion on the NX at a cheaper cost than a full new title if it detects you own the game. Seems really feasible to me and I'm kind of surprised something like that hasn't already happened.

More realistically, you only have a year or two before they shut down the servers. Once the NX comes out it is unlikely that Nintendo will continue to want to support their old, obsolete stuff like the 3DS and Wii U (and even if they do, pretty much no developers will).

Just download your favourites now and by the time the servers are down you will have more than the 8+ worlds regular Mario games give you.

That sounds ridiculous.

you should make buckets full of tears
:tpi:

Seriously though, the game has sold (comparatively!) really well, I can see Nintendo going the Little Big Planet route with this, giving us newer games that we'll be able to play all this 'old' content on. Your created levels will live a lot longer than the Wii U will for sure (not that that's difficult, but let's not bring that up yet again!!)

It likely also means we won't see many Mario platformers, if any, following the classic formula they've followed so far. If they were to make a new platformer, they'd have to revolutionize themselves, or risk "piracy" in the form of people recreating those levels in Mario Maker, haha.
