How to SoftMod a Wii to Play Backup Wii, Gamecube and Wiiware Games

(Disclaimer: Stop in your tracks and visit
https://gbatemp.net/threads/modify-any-wii-4-3-below.171901/
It is a MUCH more updated tutorial for Soft-Modding your Wii. )

(If you new to Softmod a Wii this will give you a 100% safe guide from start-to-finish to play Wii Games, Gamecube Games and Wiiware/Virtual Console games from an USB-drive. Im not kidding. In this guide we only use official files to minimize any risks apart from Step 4 . But I can assure I used this guide to softmod my sister's Wii. She can now play Skyward Sword by USB-drive without problem! :) )

Requirements:
*SD Card (no SDHC)
*SD Card reader
*Wii updated to 4.3 (4.3 is latest version, just update your Wii and you be fine)
*Internet Connected Wii
*USB-hdd to store Wii games and Gamecube games
*To play Gamecube games you need this Wii Console and Gamecube Controller
(No Gamecube Memory Card is required if you use NMM)

A short description what each step does
Step 1 - You install Homebrew Channel to install Apps.
Step 2 - Safety Precaution. Backup Wii System (NAND) to your PC.
Step 3 - Safety Precaution. Install Priiloader to prevent disc updates to damage your Wii.
Step 4 - Patch IOS and Install WADs using Two Easy Apps. Install USB Loader GX to Play Wii Games .
Step 5 - Install a d2x Custom IOS to enable New Wii Games. Install DiosMios to Play Gamecube Games.
(Spoilers Window) Add 'n Play Wii/Gamecube Games + Update USB Loader GX (req for Gamecube games)
Step 6 - emulate Wii System (NAND) on USB-hdd making Add WiiWare/VC Games near impossible to damage your Wii .

1. Install Homebrew Channel

Follow HighTeckMans instructions in video :

2. Backup Wii NAND (to restore your Wii if anything goes wrong)

Important! Make sure SD-card has more then 700mb free space
Important! Make sure your Wii has more then 700 blocks open. To Check: Turn on your Wii. Goto Wii Options - Data Management - Save Data - Wii. In 'Blocks Open:' there should stand 700 or higher. Then Return to Wii Menu. Press Back 4 times.
Follow S Winegars instructions in video :
- In BootMii use the Power button to cycle through options in the menu, and Reset to select.

1. When Wii NAND is backed-up using Project Phoenix Medias video guide. Shutdown Wii. Remove SD-card from Wii and put SD-card into Computer.
2. Open SD:\ and check that you have two following files 'NAND.BIN' and 'KEYS.BIN'. Copy these two files into a safe location on your Computer. My tips is to save them into a usb-stick or Dropbox if your Computer crash.
3. Once you saved the two files 'NAND.BIN' and 'KEYS.BIN' you should remove them from SD-card (NAND.BIN takes 500mb)
4. Done! :)

3. Install Priiloader (regionfree games and stop updates)

1. Plug SD-card into Computer
2. Download Priiloader_v0_7.zip . Unzip and Put it into your SD Card. (SD:\)
3. Download hacks_hash.ini - Scroll down to 'Pre-compiled Hacks download' , right-click, save link as, and save into SD:/apps/Priiloader/ .
4. Remove SD-card from Computer and plug into Wii . Turn on your Wii. Launch Homebrew Channel. Then launch Priiloader.
5. Press A to Install
6. Once Priiloader is installed shut down the Wii (Sometimes you Wii freezes after Priiloader installation. Its totally normal. Just re-start your Wii with reset and after Wi Menu appears shut down the Wii)

(configure Priiloader)
1. Press the "Power" button while holding down the "Reset" button on your Wii until the Priiloader menu is displayed on your screen.
2. In Priiloader select "System Menu Hacks". These are the following 7 hacks I suggest you select: 'Region free EVERYTHING', 'Block Disc Updates', 'Remove NoCopy Save File Protection', 'Block Online Updates', 'Remove Diagnostic Disc Check', 'Move Disc Channel', 'Auto Press 'A' at health screen'. Select Save Settings when Done.
3. To Exit Priiloader select System Menu
4. Done! :)

A video how to configure Priiloader can be found here :

PS: By having Priiloader you prevent disc updates that can damage Homebrew.

4. Install USB Loader and Custom ISO

Follow HighTeckMans instructions in video - Zip-file from Youtube video Required :

Important! Skip 10:00 - 13:00 in the video. We will not use Wbfs Manager instead we use WiiBackupManager to add Wii games, explained in Part 5 - spoiler windows - Play Wii/Gamecube games from USB-hdd.

PS: Just so you know - I tried it myself. If you WiiWare wasn't working through emuNAND. Look in USBLoader GX - Settings - Credits, if your using the 'cIOS249-d2x-v10-beta52' it will not work! Go ahead and install IOS249[56]-d2x9b47.wad using Step 5 in this guide. Then Wiiware works. :)

Happens when playing USA games with a European Wii. Open selected VC game - 'Settings' - 'Loader Settings'in 'Video Patch 'select Force NTFC. Press Save. Now it should work. :)

Use cheats (Ocarnia) in Wiiware/VC games
Unfortunely I can't get Ocarnia working with Wiiware/VC games in USB Loader GX. So an alternate solution is to use the App '....tbc

The benefit of emuNAND
WAD installation happens on Computer therefore there is NONE TO LESS risk of Brick your Wii. If you wish to play Wiiware/VC games emuNAND is your solution. period.

250 GB is kind of small, my Wii collection right now breaks the 100 GB and I am still planing on getting more games since you can get them for basicaly nothing at e-bay or fleamarket. Given, that gamecube games have roughly 1 GB I could fill up another 30+ with them.

What HDD are you using?

Anyway, the Fat32 is formated like the guide described, did it twice just to be on the safe side.

Will try the splitup in smaller partitions, could I create one partition for Wii games and one for Gamecube?

EDIT: To solve the potential HDD Problem, would it be better to try single games with an USB Stick or are HDD best?
USB Sticks could work.
Its the first you should do, try another usb device or DIOSMIOS Lite with SD-card to see if the USB HDD is the reasons of your problem .

EDIT: Also you could check your HDD sector size.
Words from Cyan (developer of USB Loader GX)

Cyan, post: 4912418, member: 746"]You can try USBLoaderGX r1218
It contains a hardware check (which should work, but I never got any report about that feature).

When you launch a gamecube game using DIOS MIOS, It will check in this order, and report this error:
Check if the partition is FAT.
To run GameCube games with DM you need to set your 'Main GameCube Path' to an USB FAT32 partition.
Check if the partition is the first partition on the drive (not the first partition of the first primary, but the first of the device).

Use an HDD, but FAT32 is an old technology and can't hold files bigger than 4GB nativity, which is why I say 2TB is way too large. 1TB is 1000GB of storage, so are you planning on having 2000GB of Wii/GC games on a dedicated drive that you can only hold files up to 4GB on? It just doesn't seem practical. Also, you're planning on playing all the games on the drive? I have years into emulation and Steam Sales and let me tell you, I play probably 1% of all the games/roms I own. To each his own but that's just my opinion and speaking from personal experience.

If you're planning on getting more games to store on the drive I would suggest a 500GB FAT32 partition and format the rest NTFSA or whatever else you may use (Windows vs Mac). I have a pretty hefty collection of Wii/GC games and am only using about 200GB of my 250GB drive, and that's also with a decent amount of playstation games on it as well.

Got it to work with Nintendont, no idea why DiosMios simply refuses to work.

Are both programs equaly capable of running GC-gamces?

I have a question about Step 5 - I've gone through and installed IOS 249 and DIOS MIOS to IOS 249. I can see my GC/Wii games on my USB drive through cfgUSBLoader, but I cannot see GC games through USB Loader GX 3.0 (Wii titles show up OK). I copied the games using DMToolbox to my USB drive directly - I did not take the step in DMLizard as mentioned in the video to convert the GC iso/gcm files. Does DMToolbox handle the same function as DMLizard?

If so I may just have a view issue in GX. All Wii and GC games show up correctly in cgfUSBLoader just fine. I'm still learning the ins and outs but it seems that cfgUSBLoader may be better for GC games anyway due to the additional configuration that may be needed to launch them. I tried loading a backup of Custom Robo in cfgUSBLoader which is on the DIOS MIOS compatible list, but just got a black screen. I didn't have time to test any other backups last night but looking forward to when I get back home tonight.

Just to share my thoughts on gamecube games .

I believe DiosMios is easier to play ISO (downloaded games from internet) and Nintendont is used for backups from original gamecube discs.

Just my two cent.

Also... Report back if this method solved your problems or not.

Your Wii is expensive and I never heard (before) someone having issues with Priiloader not showing up in Homebrew Channel.

1) you welcome!

2) On computer : you install WiiMod by putting the folder 'wiimod' into apps on your sd card, sd:/apps/wiimod/ . You find Wii Mod in Step5s Youtube video like in the previous step. Then just follow instructions written below step5 video. .. the IOS249[56]-d2x9b47.wad can be found in same zip as wiimod. Just create a folder on sd card called 'wads' and put the wad file into sd:/wads/ . After that you put the sd card into your Wii and find WiiMod in Homebrew channel. Then install the wad with WiiMod and thereafter diosmios to Ios 249. ,.

3) That is all :) . If you replaced the file in sd:/apps/usbloader_gx/ next time you start Wii and USB Loader GX it should be the latest version.

((also...)) if some reason your wii games isnt displayed in USB Loader GX when you use a usb harddrive. You could need to get another version of cIOS - v10 - just read my post in http://gbatemp.net/threads/how-to-s...and-wiiware-games.360687/page-17#post-5352669

Hey, thanks for this guide. I am having a problem with not being able to load my ISO files in. I am able to view and copy in disks I have, but when I put ISO on my hdd (formatted for fat32 with the proper directories) I don't have the "load button" that you linked before to load the games in. I visited the site for USB loader GX and they had screenshots of both what I see and what you see. How do I change to the view with those buttons?

the view I need for those buttons: http://s6.filetrip.net/p/351/221487-cadre1-img2.png
Thanks

Looks like you have an older version of Loader GX. Do you have 2.x version or 3.0? I'd recommend 3.0 and then you should get all the appropriate view buttons.

:| I just realized I installed it with a pack from 2012. Yea I just sent the updates to install and will edit this post on whether or not it works.
Edit: No difference, I am fully updated now on both the loader and the WiiTDB files
Edit 2: I had v1.0 apparently, I don't know what version I'm on now, just that it says no more updates found. Is it possible that I need a newer file entirely and that it can't update since it's so old?
Edit 3: I used the DMlizard to get the right version and the button is there now, but when I go ahead and hit it and tick the Wii Games then load it does nothing.

Try..
To put Wii games on HDD you need to use WiiBackupManager ,
http://www.wiibackupmanager.co.uk/downloads.html

Play Wii/Gamecube games from USB-hdd
To Play Wii Games - Download and Open WiiBackupManager . Click 'Drive 1' and select USB-drive from 'inactive' . Click 'Files' - 'Add - Files' and select your Wii ISO file(s) . Lastly Click 'Transfer - Drive 1' to put all Wii ISO file(s) into your USB-drive .

If u used WiiBackupManager, Also...
Try using Wiiflow or cfg loader and see if your wii games shows up.

just wanted to say thank you! the game loaded up perfectly!!, just one last question, is there a way to turn on NMM in usb loader gx?
yes.

NNM is an alternative saving method for gamecube games. You simply don't need a Gamecube Memory Card anymore. You enable NNM in 'Settings' inside USB Loader GX. With NNM enabled your saves for gamecube games are stored in the Wii, not a memory Card.

I reformatted the drive back to the fat32 to clean it out and then loaded the games back in with the WiiBackupManager, checked USB Loader GX, CFG Loader, and Wiiflow. Nothing showed up on any of them except for one game I pushed into it earlier from disk.

Send us a syscheck

Post a syscheck - https://gbatemp.net/threads/posting-a-system-check.300279/

However, it seems your issue is hard drive related. Your usb hdd isnt found by Usb Loader..
So I recommend to try out ios v10 instead, install guide can be found here.
