You only have to worry about being banned with public headers if you play online right? Public headers for offline is fine?

So I haven't stayed up to date with this thread for a while. What's the new conscientious? Is CIA still safe? Private header .3dz? Which is safer, if we know. I wanna start playing MH4U (first online game) and wanna know if I should go the CIA route like all my offline games or private header .3dz.

Public headers for offline is fine?
You don't even need headers if you are playing offline.
Keep the filename to .3ds if you are using gateway, and it will use the fake header. the advantage is that you can share savegames on internet with all users without the need to use savedatafiler as savegames encryption is tied to the header too.

If you are using Sky3DS, don't care about the used template. You can use public headers if you like, you won't go online anyway.
I don't think there is a report of used headers/games when playing offline and enabling Wifi or playing online with another game later.

Well, it's my turn to report something (strange).
I used public headers a couple of times on my backup of pokemon omega ruby just to download the eon ticket from secret gift.
Today I got the error 002-0102 with mario kart 7 and other games, although, if I try to download DLC contents in games such as monster hunter 3 and monster hunter 4, I got this error: 090-0016.
Even more strange, I can access online content and multiplayer games on the e-shop downloadable free version of sub wars steeldiver and even with ironfall (always free version). Have I got banned or not? I'm confused :S
EDIT: using Sky3DS on my N3DS with latest firmware

Can you still access your friend list? If it still give you error-code then you are banned

I don't understand what you all mean by access friend list... If i hit the button that leads me to my friend list, everything is fine (no errors) but since I don't actually have any friend code in my list I don't know if there should be any error or not.

as far as our evidence has shown us... that should be ok but no one really knows what Nintendo are looking for...

they might still be able to find out that the header isn't for the game your playing.

all we can say for sure is that no one has been banned yet for using ONLY Private headers.

I am still using a Public header, not because I believe I wont be banned... its because im still testing the whole "using ANY public header will get you banned" theory.

iv been using mine for over a month now and still no ban, im not under the illusion that I will never be caught... it doesn't bother me if I am banned as I don't play games on my DS for online play...im just testing to see what happens and how long for.

What kind of header are you using? Can you give us a link to it? Maybe it is not a popular header like metal gear solid

The error would still appear. You're not banned.

About the report format, where is the part about it cheat is used, or modification on games or Daves is used.

That's what I wanted to hear.
Let me explain my little (stupid) experiment.
At first, I wanted to check if I will get banned if I try a random generated 16 bits as a (most probably) unique header, but I did a really, really stupid thing. When I edited the basic Sky3DS template (the one that is downloadable from their website) I edited the 4th row of bytes of the corresponding game I wanted to play online (the one that should be all 0's) instead of the 5th one (the one that is actually the header). After that, as soon as I realized I edited the wrong line, I promptly generated some more bytes to edit the header of the games I wanted to play online and replaced the public ones given by Sky3DS unmodified template file with random generated ones and when I tried to access online features on respectively mario kart 7 and mh4 (which I changed headers with random ones) I got 002 error, most probably because their header are not valid to access multiplayer functionalities as the public ones. If something isn't clear let me know and I try to explain better, english isn't my mother tongue.

EDIT: I haven't used any kind of cheats nor modified saves.

EDIT2: Looking better, the error code I get is 002-0123. Is Nintendo joking on me? :P

Then you're totally not banned. I think that error might just be because you put a header in incorrectly.

From Nintendo web site:

Error Code: 002-0123
Situation:

  • You receive the error code 002-0123 when attempting to connect online.
  • Error message, "You cannot use online services with this Game Card."

4ur0r: I got this exact error message (not number part, but the text part) in-game when I tried going online with my personal dump of Pokémon Omega Ruby. I'd later realized it was because it was an unmodified dump (didn't mess with any headers stuff). This leads me to believe that Ericzander is right about the header being incorrect.

You're most probably right. I random generated 16 bytes that are not a valid header (even if they are unique).
