Hmm, interesting...
These past months it's been hack after hack for the 3DS.
Only reason this worries me is that, since it is supposedly free, people will go for this rather than Gateway.
No funding for Gateway anymore if that's going to happen, and they'll die out.

Nah, I dont think so. There will still be the appeal of playing backups with GateWay, and unless this supports downgrades, then that too

.3DS backups yes, but really you have to agree most people buy Gateway for piracy.
And something like this rewritten launcher.dat has the ability to run .CIA files, which doesn't make a difference for your average pirate.
Also, you can already downgrade without owning a red card. Just load up your NAND dump and your .DG file on the SD card and go to the web exploit.

I don't understand this.
Gateway team brought to us the first flashcard in the hacking scene, they also brought emuNAND support, CFW (albeit leaked),
If something like, a custom free launcher.dat with no red card checks, that's free to download on a forum existed, it gives Gateway's only product, the red card, no reason for existence.
The red card is making them money, and if they run out of funding, they won't last long.

Hey everyone! First off, thank you to TheHomesk1llet! If this goes through... Yay! If not... well, at least you tried, and thats better than the people who are just hating, they are not putting in any effort at all. How is it hurting them? Not at all! You have my support!

Also, on a side note, I find it amusing everyone goes "omg homebrew without flashcard?! Yay!!", when the exploit gateway is using has been on 3dbrew for a while now :ha: !

? Oh, I must have been mis-informed. Can you link some documentation on the WebKit exploit please?

Yes, but how does that worry you, are you gateway?

We only got what we have today because someone else worked and leaked somthing that rivled/threatend gateway a bit, they got worried and upped the features on their end. Can't you see that without Competitors then things go stagnant, you never know what may come of all this once it's released.

You do have a point, but they do seem to know what they're doing when delivering (Brick code aside).

Personally, I wouldn't call the CFW leak competition, I think of it more as Blackmail.

If it wasnt for the leak we wouldnt have got cfw as the team developing were not going to release it publicly.

I don't understand why people are so concerned about the fate of a flashcard manufacturer. Surely it is better for the scene if exploits are open and available to all so they can be updated by the scene, rather than the whole scene relying on the whim of the flashcard manufacturers? If it wasn't for sceners like Smealum, homebrew would still be limited to no sound and access to bearly any services due to Gateway's artificial restrictions.

Besides if people are so concerned, maybe the existance of a newer CFW would force Gateway to up their game with new features. Yay competition etc.

The issue at hand is gw have an incentive to do this: their next pay check.

The issue with 'the scene' is that it will be done in their free time.

Who do you suggest would have more reason to release the next emuNAND update asap? Or the next exploit?

Some guy making an exploit on his free time in his basement < A whole group dedicated to the development of such an exploit
But greed will take over eventually, that's the issue.

And do you think Gateway would have put so much effort to achieve the multi-rom loader, EmuNAND etc. if they weren't facing competition from other cards such as MT? Do you think Gateway would have magically gained .cia support if it wasn't for the CFW being leaked? Without such pressures forcing Gateway to keep up, we'd still have a single rom cart and no sound in homebrew.

I love my Gateway, but they're not doing it just because they're nice guys - flashcards are a moneymaker. If there are open source, free alternatives then Gateway will be forced to improve their own support to stay ahead. Everybody wins.

This is why the 3ds scene is such shit. I've modded my ps3, xbox (original), Wii, Ps2 (via fmcb memory card) and psp without buying anything, and those exploits were always updated promptly and effectively. But those communities weren't complete shit and people actually worked together. Even DS cards had a billion clones which drove the price down; for the 3ds people want clone makers to die in a fire. Only the 3ds scene has to rely on a drm card to expect any progress. There is too much bullshit in the 3ds scene for there to ever be real progress.

Exactly. The PSP and Wii scenes were probably the most active, both in terms of homebrew and also stuff like the USB Loaders on the Wii. Yet no flashcart was necessary for those. If money is the only thing that fuels innovation and progress, why has Nintendont made such insane progress and is now almost perfect?

Flashcard manufactuers come and go. If you rely on them too much, the scene dies when they disappear.
