Update nov 23 2014: The cache.txt support is officially dropped from nintendont. Please skip this thread, nothing relevent to use now.

Hi all, If someone is looking, working or requesting a cache.txt for their games, you are on the good place :)

A quick tutorial about caching files;

It's easy to see what files are shown, you need to make this: In dolphin 4.0.2, go to "View" and in that menu select "Show Log" and "Show Log configuration", after that you will see a black screen in dolphin window, go in and click where it says "Log Configuration" and click "Toggle All Log Types", down you need to select "File Monitor" and "Master Log", in Logger output select Write to Console and Write to Window, in verbosity select Warning, and after that you need to load a game, and you will see Dolphin showing which files is loaded. :)

The limits are 28MB of files and 220 files.
Remember to cache little files, in open worlds games like True Crime it's more difficult to cache because the files are larger, for example, a file from that game it took 16MB to cache...

Current cache.txt made by various members;

GALE01 (Super Smash Bros. Melee) by Crediar
GMSE01 (Super Mario Sunshine) by Intermet & VinsCool
GIKE70 (Ikaruga) by thedax
GZ2E01 (Zelda: Twilight Princess) by faku-1810
GZLE01 (Zelda: Wind Waker) by VinsCool
GZ3E70 (Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2) by Goku Junior
GUPE8P (Shadow the Hedgehog) by Goku Junior
GNSE8P (Sonic Adventure 2: Battle) by Goku Junior
G2CE52 (True Crime: New York City) by Goku Junior
GLEE08 (Resident Evil 3) by Nemesis90 and improved by Goku Junior
GFZE01 (F-Zero GX) by Greyrogue. This cache.txt is needed to make the game working, with the latest nintendont version.
GHQE7D (The Simpsons - Hit and Run) by Goku Junior
GKYE01 (Kirby Air Ride) by DoqtorKirby

If anyone wants to contribute, submit your cache.txt on this topic ;)

So how do we use these cache files?
Say for True Crime NY for example, i should put the G2CE52.txt in the game/True Crime [G2CE52]/ folder? Should i rename it cache.txt and have it there?
Or something different?

= EDIT =
Nevermind, i got it, it's the second method

Thank you, but it looks like the games i really wanted to cache far exceed the limit of 28MB/220 files :(. I'll test other games that need it and see if anything comes out of it.

If you want, I could make the cache for that game you wanted ;), now I'm not working in nothing.

EDIT: If a Nintendont Wii U version be relased (It is nearly imposible) we can use the 2GB and 32MB eDRAM to cache the games, GameCube games are 1.35GB genereally, so we don't have problems with that, if it were someway possible to use the Wii U 2GB and 32MB eDRAM in Wii Mode with Nintendont it would be great!.

Well i kinda lied and went ahead and made one, it's for Resident Evil 3 [GLEE08]. I can't get the loader to boot it without causing problems though, maybe you can look at it. The main files that are loaded for this game are under bio19/data_a/bss/.adt files. I loaded as many as i could until i was right under the file size limit but it still won't boot.

OK, tomorrow I will have Resident Evil 3, I will look to the ISO and see what happens, but it seems you are caching a lot of files for the same thing, what are you caching?

The files are the pre-rendered backgrounds for the game. Without caching there's a noticeable amount of loading between each screen you walk into, same thing happens with Resident Evil Zero but it's worse for that game.

I don't know how the game works very well, but I know first you need to try cache little files, then if you have enough space, and in the levels are the files (don't cache if you don't know what are you caching), cache the heavy ones, I repeat, tomorrow I will see it, but some games are really difficult to make their caches, you can see the NFS Underground, it is difficult to cache for me, I canceled that cache for 2 reasons, 1.Is the reason I told you
2. I'm not interested in that game/ I don't like it, I only said this for someone wondering why I stopped making that cache.

Is your cache.txt actually works?

ok :P I looked on the txt file, it looks like it cache a lot of similar files. Maybe it is like Luigi's Mansion, it crashes the game ?

Maybe, it could be, I asked him what kind of files are they, there are Pre-render levels, that could make the Game crashes, but the difference is Luigi Mansion cache boots, but this one no, so I'm thinking it doesn't fit correctly in Wii Memory, but in older posts he said he doesn't overpass the limits...

I've tested the game, it works, but the controls are bad, and you can't use the weapons, I don't know if it I don't know how it plays that game, but for me it's unplayeable, I will work in the cache now.

Well, the cache it is finished BUT I don't guarantee it is working, we could say it is in beta status, because I don't know how to play the game I can't pass any screen in game, tomorrow I will try to make a better one, if anyone want to try the beta cache, I attach the file.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
