Got the prompt to update the other night. Shut down the machine once it was done preparing and gave the "ok" prompt. Played MK8 a few times online since then and the prompt has never come back. Does anybody know how often the update nag intervals are?

Every couple days from what I've seen.

I'll do some testing Razor83, thanks.

So I went and pinged nus.cdn.wup.shop.nintendo.net more and ended up realizing that the last set of numbers at the end of the IP are randomized, so I did a range block of 23.66.230.0 through 23.66.230.255. I also blocked the three IP's attached to the sites you suggested, which where 69.25.139.18[4,5, or 6].

Still updates. I've put them all down as "Source Addresses" to be blocked under all devices on my connection, and it still does nothing. I even set it up to alert me if those addresses were being accessed, and nothing came up. Me thinks Nintendo uses a different server for U.S. updates.

It's not the digital downloads that bother me so much, as I avoid them like the plague (let's be honest, tying games to a console worries me and makes it a PITA to obtain when the console dies, and it will), but the update data that installs for a game, if you have a lot of games, and eventually, all that update data's gonna most likely screw your NAND over, regardless of the model. Yeah, it sucks. The Assassin's Creed IV update data is about 1 GB, which is pretty crazy if you think about it. I only got the white model because I already have a 500 GB HDD and I didn't want Nintendo Land, didn't interest me at all, to the 8 GB size didn't bother me, at least, initially. But if these disc updates end up being unnecessarily huge, yeah, those with that model are SOL. Only option is to go digital, so yeah, damned if you do, damned if you don't. I'll only go digital once it's tied to an account and not console, so like, never.

Or you know, turning of Standby will prevent that, that's the catch, you have to have Standby enabled for that to take effect, but that also means no quick menu.

Agreed, Nintendo's digital purchases model is aweful . For them it;s like stealing from a baby.
If your console dies, you LOSE ALL YOUR PURCHASES.
So to ALL PEOPLE, BUY PHYSICAL COPYS!
People should be made more aware about this when they purchase a game/dlc.
I mean at the point you turn in your points/ buy something., Not only in the user agreement as it is now.

I prefer to buy the games myself but this feature would be useful for LCU.

That god damn game's loading times are long as hell! You could go take a piss, wash your hands and it'd still be loading.

Yup but LCU is probably the only game that loads that long.
It's also very stupid that it need to load the games select menu, and then has to load the game as well after pressing start wich takes twice as long.
( so you have to load the game 2 times before you can even play! )
Then when in game it's just loading the missions, so the overworld does not take any loading.
BUT THE POLICE STATION THAT ACT AS A IN GAME CONTENT PURCHASE HUB, has to load every freaking time.
All in all the game is very good despite of this, I enjoyed getting 100% on this game, it's fun till the bitter end.
Loading times could have been more 'logical'.

and than have it freeze 5 minutes later

Since the latest Wiiu system updates I have never experienced any hangs of my games anymore
I think the 4.1 system menu was very instable.
Previous any of my games would hang at unknown intervals for no reason ( But I can imagine going forth and back from the browser tasked the system more)
Ever since the last ( pre 5.0 ) update I have neverxperienced it for any of my games.

I rarely have lockups anymore, it's been very stable for me :D

I put 69.25.139.188 as the "Destination Address" and selected "LAN→Internet" for the direction - in other words i'm preventing any device on my network from accessing nus.wup.shop.nintendo.net.
Perhaps this is where its going wrong for you?

You can get them back by calling Nintendo. It's not great to have to do that but it's not like they're gone forever.

Yup, setting it to "Destination Address" worked. Now as soon as I click update, it yells at me with error code "105-4207", which is talking about my connection being poor or something. It doesn't even get to trying to download, because it's not even able to scan if there's an update available! Thanks lad! This'll work perfectly!

What about the Download History? Are those downloads stuck to that Wii U in use only?

I thought the Download History would work on other Wii U's if the same user logged in and downloaded it.

Question: If I wwant to redeem my free game, does this mean I have to update since i need to go on the eshop?

Well, for now it shouldn't matter if you update, but yes, IDK how long the download codes last, so theoretically you could wait it out but you'd be better off updating now and downloading it. Unless blocking updates with router trickery somehow disables the notification to update at the eShop, but that would require someone testing that theory.

It's until June 30, I think so there's still plenty of time.

I just don't want to lose my chance at homebrew.

If we want homebrew to be accessible to a lot of people then we're going to have to port it to 5.0.0 anyways, and we already confirmed that the bug we use to get code execution still exists, it's just the actual code we use to get code execution changed, so we just have to find new addresses for it to work, so you're good regardless.
