tbh i can understand when people are still saying everyone who got bricked is a liar, by gateways own admission they have only just got retro's 3ds so any past comments would of been about diffrent case's (or just made up). i would be pretty pissed of if everyone kept calling me a liar when i am just trying to warn people ( i actually warned people not to use the region free mod and got attacked for saying it might not be safe....so i kinda know how it feels to be attacked for trying to help, even being ranted at on how its even SAFER than an unmodded gw launcher lol.......and look how that ended  )

granted he could try be a bit more understanding that people are just going on what gateway are claiming...its all a bit of a mess atm

A mess GW seriously could have handled better, my understanding is legit GW bricks have been caused by corrupted SD cards... So even with that GW could easily say its not the fault of the GW card itself. Granted this is a copout as chance of brick without GW in the first place is soooo small. But still, their software works with their hardware. There will always be a small number of people with issues.

I actually haven't seen anyone yet accuse him of being a liar. Only the people who have not produced reliable confirmation that their console got bricked.

My comments are not aimed personally at anyone and anybody can do typo's. I'm just sick and tired of this mess and everything surrounding it. Anyone else who experienced it would be.

Gah, guys, this is not the "off-topic" section, you can't just start talking about completely unrelated stuff like that! :P

Anyway, keep this civil. And remember, nobody likes grammar nazis.

i really want to make a thread. I actually signed up here to get some info on what is going wrong with my 3DS.

I know from reading in the past 2.02b GW FW is not safe and I continue to use it because I didn't fine a firmware 1.2.. Now I'm experiencing problems with the sound... the volume button isn't working and got somewhat switched to the 3ds slider. The 3ds slider works but when I turn it on the sound gradually decreases. Help me!!!

nothing to do with the gateway bricks....sounds like a hardware fault, you could try opening it up and cleaning it out

also you could switch to b1, but if you insist on staying on b2 stay out of diagnostics

Oh so it's not the gateway brick fault.
What kind of cleaning would you suggest me to do? I don't deal with hardware much. But sliding the volume button isn't working.. And the 3DS slider is acting like the volume button..

And is the diagnostic what's causing the bricks? Can I get a site where I can download previous FW? I got my gateway a couple months back and 2.02b was only available on their site.

OK NVM I turned off my system for awhile and it's back to normal... WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

just try resetting the connecters i.e removing them and re-inserting them,i haven't dealt with this issue before so I'm not sure what could be causing it, maybe someone else might have more help, this is all i can suggest, im not sure if doing a system format would do much, it does sound more like a hardware issue

OMG Now WTF!! Man now my top screen starts to fizzle and now it's not displaying images or the image just comes on for a quick second and disappear.

Noooooooooooo.......

Maybe it could of bee cause by me blowing into the volume button all the time now to get it to work properly.. I unno could be water damages or something... If I let my 3DS dry maybe it might suffice again..

It does!!! Yeeeee

Another Brick reported on Maxconsoles.

today I had my first brick with Gateway HW & Software. I believe it happend because I let my device (running EMUNAND) on in sleep mode until the battery was drained -was lying there for several days. Software used was GW 2.0b2 from gateway official site.

Problem is:
> Power on gives me Bluescreen with Errorcode 00000008
> Regular HW Mod does no longer work -> 00000400 Error -> drive is no longer detected.

I've read about unbricking with Raspberry PI, so I've ordered one and will use it to repair my device.

To sum it up: Dying battery while running EMUNAND _MAY_ be a bad idea, it only happened once for me but that one time bricked the device -> if that was the cause, it may be good to avoid it, unless you like tinkering around with your 3DS (like I do).

I've also added my proof of purchase (dating back to November 2013, where no bricks were around that time and no mention of clones or the like) as well as photos from the problem & the carts - just to avoid the "has to be a clone" thing
wink-new.png

Guess we have to face it - GW also bricks, not only clones (even though I myself strongly believed they wouldn't before today).

Best wishes,
Tamashii

any updates on this gateway farce?

what on earth possessed this moronic idiots to brick customers consoles, baffles me. How on earth would bricking their competitors console benefit them? they were fools for thinking that it would. All it does is cause people to avoid all flash cards, theirs as well.

As others have said, a simple code to disable the clone card, would have been smarter and not pissed off and scared off a whole bunch of people, and people equal customers.

I encountered some problems. No bricking but thought I'd share just in case anyone encounters the same thing it could be helpful.

I followed all the instructions.
1. Updated an older 2012 3DS XL (older, but still new in box, just opened) to 4.5.0-10U.
2. I put all the files on a MicroSD for the blue card and put it into 3DS XL. On first attempt the loading screen was stuck so I tried again and the next try it loaded up fine and installed the exploit successfully. Hit "A" and powered down.
3. Put launcher.dat onto SD card in 3DS XL with Nintendo files after it was already formatted by the 3DS XL.
4. Booted into Gateway menu using "DS Profile + L" in settings. Menu came up fine.
5. Did the NAND backup. Process completed successfully.
6. (still in Gateway menu) I wanted to boot into GW mode so I could power down and get the NAND backup file off the SD card (like the guy in the video on Gateway's site does). So I put the Gateway cart into the 3DS XL (it demanded the cart be inserted when I attempted to boot into GW mode without it. weird, since that guy in the video booted Gateway mode without the cart inserted and THEN put it in), hit "A" to boot Gateway mode, but it told me I had to update the Gateway cart so I let it update the Gateway cart and it completed successfully.
7. I tried to boot Gateway mode after updating Gateway cart successfully (because it told me I had to) I got a system error from 3DS XL.

8. After powering down I then took out the SD card and copied the NAND backup file to PC and put SD card back without the NAND file on it. I tried to load Gateway menu, but could NOT load Gateway menu instead getting the previous system error. I checked and the firmware was still 4.5.0-10U.

At this point I thought "Do I need to reinstall the exploit or what?" But I didn't try that, instead I went back and copied all the 3DS XL SD card's contents to another, different SD card and used it because the SD card I was using previously kept acting like it was locked when I'm certain it wasn't (it wouldn't delete the NAND backup after I had copied it to PC, there was no delete option) so I figured the SD card might be screwed up. After trying with a different SD card in the 3DS XL I could successfully bring up Gateway menu. I tried to boot into Gateway again, screen turned black for a while then it was in 3DS menu but Gateway cart was not showing up (apparently it doesn't until you hit select and load a rom). I didn't realize this until after another two attempts one of which had me hang on a black screen indefinitely and the second try finally had me booted into Gateway mode and I got it working.

I figure it hangs on a black screen indefinitely if the cart isn't making good enough contact or something. On my DSi XL my DSTwo has to be inserted a few times to be recognized occasionally if I've been taking it out for any reason. I'm just glad Gateway didn't decide to up and brick the 3DS XL with that issue happening (pretty sure it was the SD). I ran disk checks on every flash memory card I used after copying files to them yet still ran into that weird issue.

The way gateway works has changed, which is why you now NEED to have the card inserted to enter gateway mode, this is part of their anti-clone tactics
as for the occasional black screen on loading gateway mode......these things happen the exploit is way more stable than it used to be, its like all things, it get refined over time, but noting is ever 100% perfect
also a dodgy SD is only ever going to lead to issues, its always best to make sure all the SD cards are good/ok quality

and finally you only need to press select since 2.1 with multirom added its only reasonable that you select the rom you want rather than it always defaulting to a specific game, maybe in the fure they will make the card remember what game you played last...who knows but its just that most guides are for the pre-2.1 gateway firmware and some steps have changed

I was confused about it because as I mentioned I was watching the video linked on their site to guide me through the process and that video is out of date. It didn't occur to me at first that now with multirom you'd have to select a rom first. I just assumed that it wasn't detecting the cart since nothing was showing up there. Everything seems to be working just fine now. I can turn it on, activate GW mode and haven't hit that indefinite black screen again yet. I saw it flash to horizontal stripes once when I went to GW mode which was weird, but it still worked. Now it just does the logo on the top screen when I go to GW mode without any issue. I don't think I will use emuNAND since I have another 3DS that I can update, use all the newer stuff and eshop.

Eventhough the New 3DS XL is more powerful, I still feel like the DS Lite was a more polished system. It's a real shame that it never got an XL variant keeping the GBA slot. You'd have to go on AliExpress and buy an ML shell to give a DS phat the unofficial "DS Lite" treatment, and that's the best we'll ever get I'm afraid.

The phat model had amazingly loud speakers tho.

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.
