Considering the manufacturing costs for the carts, they're making quite a good profit per cart. They're not doing this for charity or "for the scene". Initial research has been done around before gateway came along so the r&d isn't that high either. That's the reason why selling original R4s are/were available for only a few $. The coders themselves may not make a huge profit, but the people behind the gateway will.

I don't think it'll brick as there is a new protection that prevent you enterring GW mode if you do'nt have the GW card inserted

well it seems diagnostics is safe ben run loads of times now, no bricks, i doubt they would make that mistake after the backlash, but im sure some devs who can inspect the code would be able to say more on the matter,

Yeah I would wait to hear what some devs say about the code, one of the reasons I wasn't going to leak anything.......leakers gonna leak though, putting more pressure on people actually wanting to try make sure it's safe......but as I said a actual dev will no doubt be able to confirm if the bricking code has been removed all I can do is stress test it

I'm not sure that it will be easy for any outsider to understand the Gateway firmware due to them obfuscating the code. Certainly it will be possible to observe at a hardware level some of the activity of the software but it will be virtually impossible to confirm that any bricking code is absent.

For example it would be possible, if Gateway desired, to have 'booby-trap' based around the number of times the firmware is run, the date or time of code execution, etc. and this would remain hidden until actually triggered.

It is certainly possible that any hypothetical new bricking code will also be more difficult, if not impossible, to undo, even with the current hardware methods.

Of course, Gateway may have removed the code altogether and are relying on the FPGA update to prevent the 'clones' from using their code, eliminating the need for bricking code.

This remains speculation and unfortunately Gateway can hardly be relied upon to be honest about this due to their less than stellar communications about the 2.02B bricking fiasco.

Following up on my earlier statement I must say I am amazed by the number of people that suddenly now seem to have complete trust in Gateway not to damage their consoles. Have they genuinely forgotten how recently Gateway decided it was OK to brick people's consoles that used 'mafia' products?

Never be amazed by what someone can accomplish with a bit of good will on the internet. Gateway did deliver in the sense that the update was released, but so far there have been a few issues with updating carts. Whether the issues are problems related to genuine carts, I cannot say. I'd just wait a few weeks to see if there are any stability issues. It's not like we missed them in the DS era either.
